Change menu keys on main page

How can I change the keys on the main page.
The stock keys are a bit old school.
Either square or oval with very little editing available.
I find them either big and somewhat ugly or small and useless.
If I creat my own graphic how can I insert them intread.

go to main menu>Menu items tab> from drop down you have 3 option for each one use "background image"
do not click on the arrow, click on folder icon next to the arrow. then upload your botton.
