Upgraded from V9. Do not have the problem in V9. Using Win 7 64 with all updates. Nothing on the blog has helped. Program freezes after ten minutes or so, after changing text or image on a page. Cannot use program without shutting down with MS Task Manager and restarting. Problem reoccurs. Please review your code and fix problem.

Hello M. Kelso,

Try to repair the .NET Frameworks by following these steps:

To repair the .NET Frameworks 3.5 and 4 you need as first to use following cleanup tool to remove .NET 4:
http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Blog_Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip
Once done go to Control Panel then choose Programs and Features and then click on Turn Windows features on or off. Clear the check box for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 and then click on OK. After Windows disables the feature you will need to go back to re-enable Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1
This procedure can take some time to deactivate and activate .NET 3.5.1 and once done reinstall .NET 4 after downloading it from following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17718

Once done test the issue by starting a new project to see if it still happens.

Please keep me updated.

I have done as asked (more than once) regarding .NET Framework. The fix is only temporary. I thought the problem was fixed with the latest update to
V12, as everything worked perfectly the same day I updated. Today I tried to make a simple text change as requested by a client. Like before, as soon as I changed one text character and tried to save the change (using save, preview or the OK button makes no difference) the program locks up and refuses to make the change or allow any other actions. The only way to end the program is using Task Manager to shut the program down.

I know everything worked well in version 9, and I have no idea what change in code was made to affect the simple task of saving a text change. I really like the program and truly need to have V12 operating correctly, especially for the responsive website formatting. PLEASE>PLEASE fix this problem. Any ideas (besides temporary .NET fixes) is welcome.

Thanks

Have you tried to uninstall all net framework versions, then install only last version from microsoft site?

Yes.  Following the instructions Claudio gave, I uninstalled twice (at different times over the last month) versions 3.5.1 and 4, then reinstalled. I have also tried several times the simple NET solution to turn 3.5.1 off then back on, to no avail. The problem still persists.

Unfortunately, none of the 'solutions' found in this post or on your blog have worked. The program has a flaw and needs to be fixed. I know I am not the only user with a problem, but I guess with so few complaints about V12 crashing (or freezing...whatever term you want to use), we don't matter. I have customer websites that demand attention that I cannot address using this program. I don't know where the problem exists as I am not a programmer. Maybe a conflict exists between this and other programs that use the same NET software (other FTP programs?) or C++. I have no clue. In any event, I cannot recommend this program to others, and will have to spend dollars buying new software and days converting files so that the few remaining websites I design (mostly for non-profit organizations) can have a reliable, stable platform on which thier websites are based. I really liked V9 but needed the responsiveness of a newer version. I am reluctant to try V12 Pro (an upgrade to Evolution?) as I don't think that will solve the problem, and it would be an expensive attempt if it failed. I will have to look elsewhere for a similar program that is reliable as you seem unable or unwilling to develop a permanent fix. That is a shame, as I do enjoy trying different concepts built into your program (based on needs of the client). I do hope you fix it, as I would like to try using it again someday. Email me when you have a permanent solution. Thanks.

I have 3 versions of Website X5 installed on a Win 8.1 PC (10, 11 & 12) and all work flawlessly, but I understand your frustration.

Is there any chance the issue is with your hardware?  Unless you have already done so, can I recommend you run chkdsk c: /r (click start, type cmd into search box, right click on cmd.exe and run as admin, in the DOS box type chkdsk c: /r)

Windows will ask if you want to check the hard disk at next restart.

Assuming it runs (could take hours), there is a good chance that faulty or week sectors may get repaired or locked out (after moving good data).

I have had similar issues in the past, especially the dreaded "it worked at first and then stopped working" - if this fails, is there any chance of malware on your PC (try malwarebytes)

Sorry if I am preaching to the converted.

Mr. Chase:  Thanks for the suggestions. I see that you are a long time user and some of your other comments were very insightful (for possible future issues like Pro vs Evo).  chkdsk did not find any issues. I also run Symantec products but they did not find anything. The malwarebytes did find a few issues, but none that were critrical threats.

I can ad photos and captions and save or preview, but cannot ad or change text. I still have the problem with changing any wording...even one character change locks up the program when I try to save, etc. I'm beginning to wonder if there is an issue with the toolbar.

I did notice that the font name and size does not show when I open a text box to edit existing text. However, selecting the font and size and then trying to make changes still results in freeze when I try to Save, Preview, or click OK.  I will continue the quest to find an answer. Is it possible there is a conflict with my Win7 64, as this is a 32 bit program? It was working well in V9 but something changed in V12.

Hello M. Kelso,

Your issue sounds very similar to one reported by a fellow user here:

https://helpcenter.websitex5.com/post/132698

In that particular case the user resolved the issue by reinstalling Windows 7.

WebSite X5 works fine in Windows 7 64-bit despite being a 32-bit program.  This is the configuration which I have used myself for many years with no issues.

Unfortunately your issue is almost certainly a corrupt Windows/Microsoft .NET/Visual C++ component  -  these all need to be in good working order.

Version 12 uses newer versions of these components compared to version 9, so perhaps that is a small clue if version 9 ran well on the same system.

In this (v11) case the problem was caused by Acrobat Reader:

Kind regards,

Paul

Paul is probably correct, but before resorting to a new Windows 7 install, is this an issue with only one project (I assume imported), or all projects.  Perhaps you could try create a new project and recreate the troublesome page/s. If that works I have found it a simple matter to copy page content between 2 running copies of X5. Also, since the problem is only with text, are you using some odd-ball font perhaps?

The other things I would try since all else has failed:-

Totally disable all symantec products (temporarily). I use Avast and frequently disable all shields until reboot when fault finding.

If that doesn't work. . .

Go to control panel, and create a new user. Run website X5 and your project and export to iwzip. Log off then log on as the new user. Website X5 should still be available, but you will have to copy your project between users and then import.

The only thing left after that might be to run sfc /scannow from an admin command prompt. System File Checker might get lucky, but I have seldom had to use this command in Win7 (in Win10 it is essential to run it)

X5 gets on fine with 64bit windows - even on a system like mine which has had no updates in almost a year.
