Google showing deleted pages

My project had a page which I now don't want so I removed it and then uploaded the revised project. Google however still shows a link to the original page even though it should not be there. How do I prevent Google from listing it.

You can request that Google remove outdated results from its cache by following the instructions in this article:

Thanks for that tried it but Google seems to believe that page is still active. That may be the case then as it has picked up the style of my new design for the site. It is not on my menu and I am not uploading it.

How do I dump it. Your advice would be appreciated.
Delete the page from your server, resubmit your revised sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools (https://support.google.com/sites/answer/100283?hl=en), and then once again use the link I posted earlier to remove the cached page from Google (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1663691?hl=en).
