Hi There Fellow X5 Converts,

I wish to seek the experience of you masters and masteresses of design laughing

Firstly, I must say that I absolutely love the efforts of the creators of this X5 software and I'm sure anyone answering my question feels the same.

Okay my question:

I want to build a multi-tiered site that caters for a club of small business people. (Not Physically Short Ones laughing)

They each need their own responsive display page and URL to highlight their enterprises and help drive generic traffic to themselves and the primary site. Each page requires at least basic gallery, text, contact details etc - giving their viewers an experience of that enterprise having it's own webpage. The business club has a growing membership which is currently at 70, but may likely grow to several hundred. So the primary site needs to have the capacity to develop page and service-wise to accomodate that community, without degrading resources.

I want to know (from your own perspective) what you would suggest the most versitile existing template is, or whether the exercise is best developed from scratch.

As a kiwi graphics designer, I am happy to trade expertise with expertise. So as such, for the person providing me what I consider to be the best and most helpful advice... I am prepared to create a unique image for a nominated site project that they choose. But I have to tell you in abstract terms, I think and work outside the box as far as art ideas are concerned... undecided

Really appreciate the imput from anybody who takes the time to read, consider and respond to this post. Thank you for that.

Kind Regards,

Rob

Rob there are many ways you could approach your multi-site project. The simplest would be to get a hosting plan with unlimited domain hosting (I use hostgator baby), you simply create an individual project for each business, register their domain name and point the name servers to your primary domain on hostgator. As you know you can link these domains simply by creating a folder in each project and linking it in properties to open any other site.

Alternatively almost any hosting account allows subdomains, so you could have www.mysmallbusiness.com/carpenter, www.mysmallbusiness.com/hairdresser, etc or even hairdresser.mysmallbusiness.com

If you wanted all "home pages" only within the one project, you could easily do so, but their url would be more like www.mysmallbusiness.com/carpenter.html, www.mysmallbusiness.com/hairdresser.html, etc.  Even with this arrangement each of the "home pages" could have a unique look and feel by simply creating each of these pages without a template and creating your own unique layout for each. However, such a project could become unweirldy with over 100 businesses and a few pages for each.

I would create individual projects and host as either domains or sub-domains

The objects available in WX5 make it super easy to add gallery, text, contact details, etc and WX5 does a great job developing single page websites (great for mobiles where users can scroll to contact, gallery, etc or choose to tap the menu if they wish)

I have found very few reasons to use available templates and mostly start my projects from blank, but that is not to say I do not download any templates, frequently this is done to see how an effect was implemented.
