Hi,

I have a question regarding password login for my website.

Currently I am running off two URL’s my advertised url, which is basically a landing site where people can register for access, and the main operational site which they receive a link to.

Not ideal, but started this way before login was available, and now it’s time to create a login.

I don’t really want to have users register with their own emails and passwords and all the mucking around with that.

I’d love just to have a universal login on the home page which then allows access to the rest of the site.

I have spent a bit of time reading through various pages and got a bit confused so I pose some questions here.

Can I set one login and password and pass that on to all my customers to use?

Does the login have to be an email address?

If so, does the email address have to be valid or can I randomly choose an easy one?

Once logged in, it is controllable how long their browser stays logged in, or do they have to re login every time?

Any other advice? Happy to hear why this is the wrong way to do it and reasons why.
Just want a simple login so the general public can’t access the pages and my customers will feel that the site is a bit more private.

I am using v15

Can I set one login and password and pass that on to all my customers to use? -> yes

Does the login have to be an email address? -> yes

If so, does the email address have to be valid or can I randomly choose an easy one? -> choose one randomly

Once logged in, it is controllable how long their browser stays logged in, or do they have to re login every time?

-> as long as the cookie from x5 is on the pc  and visitor has not used the logout key from the login/logout object then they don't have to login next visit.

You can not set the home page as locked page also the blog page is not available to be locked, maybe some other special pages as well. but the all normal pages can be locked for visitors without login credentials.

the login logout object is not specificaly needed.

It's not wrong, but not very safe, but i think that you already knew this.

Hi Andre,

Thanks you, explained well.

Yes, as I said, currently anyone who knows the URL to the wholesale site has access.

This has worked well over the years, but as we are growing a lot now, it is best to password up.

My feelings are that anyone who has access with a password can pass it on to someone else to use if they like.

The only people who have the passwords will be those who I give it to, so I don't see it as much more unsafe. Also, the only thing I am protecting is my wholesale prices, which isn't too big a deal.

I'll give it a go and see how it goes.
