I am using WebSite X5 Pro 20.20.3.4
If I choose the default image "Nothing" in the photo gallery (attachment web_1 and web_2), the gap between row 1 and row 2 is too large (attachment web_3)
Is it possible to reduce this gap?
If I choose an image in the photo gallery (attachment web_4) the displayed thumbnail is cropped left and right (attachment web_5) the actual size is in the attachment attachment web_6

Viktor, one part of your problem has been caused by a change to the masks for the photo gallery, since you too should have access to old versions of WX5 please see this thread for directions on how to bring back the better masks in older versions (without zoom)

The gaps between thumbnails and between rows can be affected by outer image margin.
But if you wish to minimise the gap between rows you will need to ensure all images have either identical proportions or identical size (ie WX5 looks at all thumbnails before display and sets the row deth based on the "deepest" image).
eg. if all images were 640w x 480h but one was 480w x 640h then that one deep image would set the row depth for all thumbnails.
