Remove old website from internet and replace new onde

I am building a completely new website. Can I place it over the old website or do I have to delete the old one and how do I do that? I host my current website at one.come but want to switch to the hosting of websiteX5.

You can overwrite - BUT - a lot of unused files will remain.
It is much easier to first delete the existing and then upload the new. Else it could be quite a job to find what to delete amongst all the files.
But if you switch to a new ISP, why should deletion then be needed?

as John suggested, you can remove the existing website from the destination folder and then upload the whole project online.
