X5 Professional v12 fails to start after latest Win 10 update  en

Author: Malcolm P.

Following the latest upgrade to Win 10 build 1511, Website X5 Pro 12 fails to start with the error 'Could not load file or assembly 'CefSharp.Core.dll' or one of its dependencies. The specified module cannot be found' and a request to reinstall the program.

Reinstalled X5 Pro (v.12.02.17) and it then said .NET framework 3.5 was required. Having further installed this as requested, X5 then still fails to start as before, with the identical 'CefSharp.Core.dll' error message.

The Windows 10 update may or may not be a direct causal factor, but Website X5 was running fine prior to that and now neither X5 Pro 12 nor my previous X5 Evol. 11 will run on this machine. Fortunately I still have a working Win 7 installation on my main desktop PC, but I am currently trying to complete a website and this failure is very inconvenient. Please advise ASAP.

Thank you.

Thank you for your suggestions Aleksey. After further research*, I found that the immediate solution appears to be to reinstall/repair the Visual C Redistributable Package 2012 update 4, following which X5 then opens normally. I note that CefSharp.Core.dll was present at all times, contrary to the error message.

However, X5 also now appears significantly less stable on that machine than previously, and now has a tendency to crash when clicking on pages in the Map Creation section, which it didn't do before.

(A further issue with incorrect scrolling arrows  in the gallery object has also appeared since the Win 10 update, but I'll start a new post for that one)

*I remain very suspicious of the Win 10 update as that also appeared to screw up my Adobe CS6 installation, for which a similar solution with VCredist 2012U4 was proposed.

I would be grateful for any further suggestions that might help resolve the current instability in Website X5.

Thanks to all in advance.

Updated to add that it is now impossible to edit any pages via the Win 10/Website X5 Pro 12 installation, as double clicking on the page title from the Map Creation window OR clicking on the Edit Page button in the page preview to accomplish the same thing now reliably crashes X5 every time.

Cleanup and updates to the .NET 3.5 framework have made no obvious difference.

My original Win 7/X5 Pro 12 installation on my other machine continues to edit the same files (on my NAS) without issue, confirming that the problem lies with the Win 10/X5 installation.

Hi Malcolm,

Having similar issues. see below: "Evolution 12 won't install as .Net3.5 won't download".

I can't get X5 to run at all.

I too suspect the recent Win Windows 10 update.

Hope a solution is found for us both (and anyone else affected) soon.

Onwards and upwards.

Have you tried running sfc /scannow from an elevated (admin) cmd prompt? It appears the updates may be breaking some windows components.

I am not yet running X5 on Win10, but this has fixed issues with other software after the upgrade.

Hello Esahc

Thank you for your suggestion. Have just applied it (errors were found despite being a fresh installation of Windows) and have managed to complete my X5 reinstallation as a result.

Very much appreciated.

Onwards and upwards.

Gordon.

Thanks for the further suggestions. I believe I have now solved this (explanation and summary below) but will leave the thread open for now in case anyone has any further contributions.

I had already tried sfc /scannow, but it didn't find any problems.

The solution to the crashing was to copy older versions of both mscvr100.dll and mscvp100.dll from elsewhere into the c:\Program Files (x86)\Website X5 v12 - Professional folder. X5 had been working fine under the original Win 10 installation until I upgraded that to release 1511 (Threshold 2), so my suspicion is that the latter replaced the original 'system' copies of those two files with later versions that are incompatible with X5. Copying older versions into the X5 folder (they weren't present previously) allows it to find and use these local copies in preference to any other versions.

For reference, the Win 10 r1511 upgrade similarly screwed up my Adobe CS6 Creative Suite installation, and it was while researching that that I found the (same) solution to both problems. I managed to find older copies of the above .dll files elsewhere in the Adobe installation and simply copied these into the appropriate folders in both cases.

At least the Adobe error messages were helpful in diagnosing the problem, if not entirely specific - the X5 CefSharp.Core.dll error was completely misleading and unhelpful, as this file is present at all times.

Summary:

(1) Uninstall and reinstall X5. This step may not be completely necessary if the following steps are successful, but it did in my case trigger a request for the .NET 3.5 framework installation (which proceeded without any problems)

(2) Install .NET 3.5 framework as required

(3) Install/repair the VC++ redistributable package v2012 update 4. This can be downloaded directly from Microsoft.

(4) Copy both mscvr100.dll and mscvp100.dll into the X5 program folder as above. These should be 'local' copies taken from other software installations, rather than the 'system' versions that may have been updated by the Win 10 update - you will need the 32-bit (x86) versions for X5. These can probably be downloaded from the web (with the usual caveat of checking for viruses etc) if you cannot find suitable copies elsewhere on your PC.

Hopefully this will help anyone experiencing similar problems. The primary cause appears to lie directly with Microsoft, but I hope Incomedia can take this on board and either correct the issue in a later update or perhaps issue a technical note or similar meanwhile with the official solution.

Cheers,

Malcolm

James,

The full title of the latest update/upgrade is Windows 10 Build 10586, version 1511 (MS codename 'Threshold 2'). It's effectively a complete in-place replacement for the previous version, so is something like a 3.9GB download and takes an hour or so further to install.

There has also been a further cumulative update since that release.

I have read, but can't confirm, that Build 10586 is no longer available via the MCT but only via the Windows Store, and that MS plan to release all future versions via this route.
