In summary, anchors are hyperlinks which when clicked on take the user to a position within the body of a web page, rather than merely the top of the page as is normally the case.

They are akin to internal page 'bookmarks', particularly useful on long pages with lots of text, where the user would otherwise have to scroll and search to find relevant information.
