Two questions:
1. Entry Page, works fine on preview. But not when I try to view it on Chrome or Firefox
- What is the actual page called when it's uploaded?
- If I knew that I could check with filezilla to see if it's actually there.
2. Possibly on the same issue, I have sometimes made changes to pages yet they have not appeared on the website. Yes I have cleared history and refreshed and reloaded pages. But the changes do not appear.
Is it a fault or is it just me being a beginner messing stuff up??
Regards Kevin
P.S. Does this site add signatures automatically?? If so where would I edit it?

Hello Kevin,
The new homepage is called home.html by default in WebSite X5.
Try opening your webpages in an incognito or InPrivate browsing window. If you can see your changes when you do that, then you have a cache issue, which is extremely common. What method did you use to 'refresh and reload pages'?
When you first start WebSite X5 you have an option to open the Preferences screen as shown in the screenshot below. You can switch the 'signature' off by unchecking the box marked Automatically add the Generator metatag.
Please let us know if you are referring to something different.
Kind regards,
Paul
Search the WebSite X5 Help Center

Hi ,
Er, I don't see that option.... maybe it's only on the PRO edition??

When I referred to signature, I meant on the forum as in having to add regards etc, a lot of sites make you lazy and provide a tick box to do the signature block automatically...

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the reply, I'll check out the 'home' page .... is index still a used by modern web pages.
By way sorry the previous two, NOTES, ended up as different messages. It's been a long day.

Kevin, you can add an entry page. The entry page becomes index.php and your existing homepage is renamed from index.html to home.html
Frequently it is necessary to delete index.html on the host because it does not get deleted during ftp upload (FIRST go to your website and check index.php exists eg www.yourwebsite.com/index.php)
No, I do not believe you can add a signature for display on the helpcenter.

Thanks for that, deleted the index.html and it looks like it's been replaced with index.php
I still have to clear my cache , which I thought I had done, also cleared history as well to make sure.
Cache is still active for some reason.
Note for dev team, it would be nice to be able to do more with the ftp on the package. Such as tidying up the pages alread uploaded and no longer required? Currently usinc Filezilla Pro to have a full clean up and re upload.
Just a thought...
Regards
Kevin
Kevin, you can. After selecting export to the internet, click the file folder.
If you do a ctrl+preview, then a full upload (not new and changed) your problems should be sorted
Did you hold down the CTRL key and press F5 when attempting to clear the cache? It is not enough to simply reload the page using the icon in the browser toolbar.

Hi Paul,
OK stepping back a little.
I have checked the website and I have index.php and home.html both there in place in the root folder. This is where I'm doing all my testing. Later I will have four sites under different site names in their own folders. I hope*.
I have cleared the cache on Firfox, Chrome. I have tried Incognito, I have tried a computer which has never before been used on this site. All have failed. They all come up with the Home.html page.
My Entry page simply has a single picture on it and times out after 10 seconds.
* Eventually I hope to have the entry page with the option to choose which of the four sites to visit. Hoping that is possible but no idea at the moment.
Reggards to all who are helping

In that case check how the DirectoryIndex is currently configured on your server.
It sounds very much as if your server is configured to serve up home.html in preference to index.php, but this is easily changeable. If you are unsure how to do this yourself then your webhost will almost certainly assist you.
Unfortunately this setting is a server setting which has nothing to do with WebSite X5 as such.
Please keep us updated, Kevin, and let us know if you require any further information.

HI, still not working, I must have something really wrong. I have even changed file names to index.html tested again and still not working. Is it possible to upload the 'site' Its not that big. for someone to check, obviously ISP stuff would vary. Does this site have ability for PM's? I don't want to put my pathetic site to be laughed at
Regards
Kevin
Did you see my previous reply before posting, Kevin? I am confident that if you adjust the DirectoryIndex setting on your server then that will cure your issue.
Unfortunately there is nothing that can be changed from within the WebSite X5 software itself which would have any effect on this. It is a server setting, and unrelated to WebSite X5 in any way.
You can verify this if you like by uploading to another server, if you have access to one.
Who do you currently host with?

HI again,
Sorry to be a pain, don't even know how to do a quote on this site..... any way,
My ISP is 1and1 (IONOS now).
I have no idea where to change the Directoryindex setting on their site (may area) I've scanned the site, but nothing shows up for me.
Regards Kevin
I've attached a file to this post for you, Kevin. If you upload this file to the same folder as your WebSite X5 index/home pages on your server, then it will probably resolve your problem without intervention from IONOS.
But, (and this is very important!), you should only use this file if there is no other file already present in that folder with exactly the same name. If there is, then don't upload... we can do something else in that instance if you let us know.
You will need to unzip the file first.. but don't rename the contents or alter them in any way.
Please check after uploading to the server that the file is still named exactly as follows:
.htaccess
Note the dot at the beginning.
The above also assumes that you are on Linux hosting, but this is overwhelmingly the most popular hosting choice so I don't envisage a problem in that respect.

Dear Paul,
Many thanks for that it is now working like expected. Can't say I understand what we have done, but do I need to
I will now continue developing and try not to ask too many questions.
Regards Kevin
