Reloading the website from a different drive - will I be able to without rebuild  en

I have a website that is sourced from two drives on my PC - C and M where C is desktop but which is 250gb and M which is 2tb. I started to make the site from folders on the C drive but as the site grew I realized I was running out of space on C so I cloned the folders onto my M drive and worked from there.

I had assumed that once I had uploaded from the M Drive, I would be able to free up space on the C Drive by deleting the website folders there.

Before I do that, I want to be sure that the website uploaded from M has no files still on C. In other words, I do not want to delete the C files only to find that when I upload from M in the future, there are not missing files like images and pdfs, etc. that were on the C Drive.

I have also saved the complete project plus backup on M Drive

Could you please advise which of the following would most likely be successful?

1

I upload the website complete from M drive, i.e. I select the complete site option and not just the most recent files..... Hopefully, the site will be complete and I can then delete the C drive files.

Question to answer: Will all the files be uploaded or will the uploading be looking for files from the C Drive even though I have cloned the C drive with the M drive?

2

I go through each page and each file on every page in the WX5 project map to check the location drive. By that I mean, I look through a gallery for example and see the location of each image in a gallery and if this is set as from C, open the exact same file in M and then delete the original. Also for links to pdfs and music files etc.

This will be time confusing and consuming, so I am hoping that I shouldn't need to bother doing that.

I am assuming that WX5 project can only upload files from the original directories. Would that be correct?

The website is www.westridgewaychurches.co.uk

Thank you for your help.

be aware:

Working from another drive could give error's see that you keep a good backup!

try this:

best is to make a backup with step5 export project. (you have alreado done so, save om another medium not M but mem stick or so.

Then change in the first page of x5 startup your project folder that is set in your preferences.

set this to a folder on your m drive.

folder should be empty. (duh)

then import your exported project and see if all works good. If all is good, check that the project folder on your m drive. If you can see your project there then it is save to delete the project folder on c drive. (not x5!)

Let me know if this works for you.

Thank you Andre

I have saved the project on my M drive as well another called L

I have changed the project name  a little  and have imported the saved project so that I now have two versions available in the Project Selection Panel.

I have checked that the contents of the saved/imported new version are all correct and they are.

I do not understand what you mean when you say: Then change in the first page of x5 startup your project folder that is set in your preferences.

How do I set the project to save to the M Drive and not the C Drive? Does the project automatically save by default to the C Drive?

I have looked in Programme Files and also Programme filex86 and Websitex5 is not there.

There is a folder called Website x 5 Evo but this is only 250mb.

If I need to change this to be on my M drive, how do I make the change on WX5.

When I have sorted this small problem, should I then resave the website completely on the server under the new name?

Thank you

Adrian

Adrian,

i give you a prtscrn, it's in dutch but you wil get there.

There you can set where you want x5 to save your projects,

But before you change this make sure that all your projects are saved with step5 export project (you already did, but also for other users). Because once changed you won t see the projects anymore at startup unless you set the project folder back to it's original folder so it is also wise to note /write down this folder in case you want to set it back later or if you would like to clean it up later.

So again here x5 keeps al your projects if you want to use your m-drive then i would suggest to make a folder on your m drive called x5_projects or something like that.

Then point the folder of your project map from x5 (see picture) to this folder.

If you start up x5 now you wont see any projects because x5 looks at the new product folder, dont copy these files from c drive it's better to use the import button and import your earlyer exported projects.

Once imoprted test them and save them.

check also just to bu sure your m-drive if the project is there.

Then you can clean up the x5 folder on your smaller c-drive.

So at the end you have x5 on your c-drive but all your projects on the m-drive, this keeps x5 fast and keeps the c drive because it's smaller cleaner because all projects are on m-drive.

Dont forget to make regular backups and don't save them on m-drive but on memory stick or sometime (just in case you have a crah on your m-drive)

Hope it's all clear? If not let me know.

oh yes, the other question, no you don't have to upload the website again, these changes are all localy you website will stay fine.
