What is the character limit on .csv import?

When importing products using a .csv file, what is the limit to the number of characters for the description field? It seems there is a maximum number of characters.

I was mistaken. I tried to import a .csv file, but it didn't work. I thought it might be field length issue, but I have found out that product names within a category must be unique. I presumed the identifier X5 provides would be the unique key, but apparantly the name must be unique as well.
Two points: It would be very handy to get an appropriate error message telling me the why, instead of just telling mere fact that the import did not work well.
In the description it is not documented that the names must be unique.
