HTM-name of linked file  en

When I make a link to a local file, that's already linked somewhere else, WebsiteX5 creates a file with a strange extension. Probably to make it unique. When this local file changes, I have to copy this file to the file with that extension! (not acceptable for me) I thought that I could solve this problem by not using duplicate links. I removed all the links, but after this WebsiteX5 is still creating these files with strange extensions. Is this a bug? Is there a workaround?

Hello Peter,

The program avoids to use duplicate names and it's why it generates the unique filename oyu noticed. To remove these files the best option is to remove the object containing it and then add the object again. I would also suggest you to update the program to the latest release.

Many thanks!

Claudio,

A friend of my uses WebsiteX5 also. He has an older version. With this version he has no problems using the same link to an HTM file more than once!!! (no unique file is created).

I wonder why my version of WebsiteX5 does this? Because these HTM-files changes regularly, it is not acceptable for me to use WebsiteX5.

Regards,

Peter

Claudio,

I have installed the newest version (10.1.0.39). The problem looks like to be solved. I was using 10.1.0.38! My friend was using (10.0...)

Between these versions this bug (because I think this was a bug) must be introduced.

Regards,

Peter

Claudio,

I have tested some links to same htm file. It is very strange. When I make a duplicate link to an htm file that I have used before (In release 0.38), WebsiteX5 creates the unique filename again! With new htm files there are no problems. When I have time I will try to make duplicate links to these same files in an other project. May be there hangs something in this project.I will let you know what the result is.

Claudio,

When I copy a page, which contains text-items with a link to a htm file, to another page, the link is also copied to a file in the "..Preview/files" directory under a name with a strange extension.

Is  this as designed, or a bug?

Peter

Hello Peter,

Since the program uses an internal library introduced in with Version 10 it is handling files with the same name in this way by making it unique. If you want to avoid to create more duplicates of the same file which will be changed or updated the best option is to upload it manually online and then add the link to the online file.

The internal library has been introduced to avoid lost files when these, after beeing added in the project where deleted on the computer which caused the problem by not displaying the file anymore.

Many thanks!

Claudio,

Thanks. I think that this solution to make filenames unique is not the right decision. It has a great disadvantage. (duplicated link is not updated on the site, if the original file changes!!!)

The reason that files can be deleted is, in my opinion, not a good reason. The designer of a website will place his htm files in a save environment. It is his responsability to keep these files up-to-date!

Peter

Hello Peter,

I understand where you're coming from.  Sadly, however, there were a great many instances of original files being lost/deleted in previous versions of WebSite X5 before the introduction of the library.  In an ideal world the issue would not exist, I agree...  however, many users seemed to be more casual when addressing the integrity of their data.

Personally I have grown to like the Library feature very much, as one can simply export an IWZIP file when travelling, and all linked files will be encapsulated within when working on the laptop, for example.

The only minor annoyance I have found is when my project references PHP scripts which I have created myself.  I have to remember to save the most recent scripts along with the IWZIP file when travelling.  That in itself isn't a big deal.  But I have found that WebSite X5 will use older versions of the linked scripts upon importing the IWZIP file at the remote location.  So I always have to use an FTP client to upload the most recent PHP file and replace the older one on the server, before I can start work.

It's a situation which I have got used to, but it would be great if WebSite X5 could somehow synchronize the updates automagically.

Kind regards,

Paul

Paul,

I understand.

It should be nice when WebsiteX5 gives a warning when you use a link more than once. Because I am a new user, I was curious what data was in the directories. There I noticed the strange extensions.
