Responsive websites

I've just started tinkering around with "responsive website" properties and I find that the side menu (see http://www.hampsteadheath.net) disappears altogether on anything other than PC size screen.
I was looking at my site on a friend's mobile phone and I find that the "responsive" pages look awful.
I must admit, I've done very little other than click on "responsive" in the general settings but I feel that the slow download speed on mobiles takes ages to load each screen.
If I take away "responsive" then the website appears ok and visitors can enlarge or minimise to see the full page but, again, without side menu.
Your comments, please.

By side menu, I mean "Page Menu"

I suspect the only way to get your page menu visible on a reduced size responsive page is to change it to a drop down from the main menu.

Thanks Esahc...
There are too many pages to do that, without creating a lot more main menu items.

Hello Nigel,
In the responsive view the page menu is no longer visible and the best option is in this case to have the dropdown menu visible in the main menu.
As alternative you can set the menu to not visible in step 2 and set the pages in the levels to visible and in the header for the desktop view add the links to the pages manually by creating the menu manually.
In this way once you are in the responsive view all the pages of the menu are shown in the mobile menu but on the desktop view you have only the menu you created.
About the loading of the page on a mobile device this depends on the content you have on every page. You can try to reduce the content or in step 3 for every page by clicking the "responsive" button choose to hide some content for the mobile view so not all content will be shown and the page loads faster.
Many thanks!

Thanks Claudio...
I'll have to think hard about this, I guess.

I have studied my stats over the last year and my website has been observed by a PC user more than two-thirds of the time so, until the figure diminishes significantly, I am going to abandon "responsive website" format.
Two friends have observed my website on their phones and the menus are all intact without using it...just a case of diminishing their screens which they are used to doing.
Best wishes,
Nigel
Nigel, unless you are actually targetting mobile users there is no need to change your site as you have said. However, if you are targetting mobile and tablet users then you will find that anyone using a google search on those devices may have difficulty finding you.

Hi there Esahc...
I haven't found this.
My stats show a third of users originate from mobiles + tablets and my rate of site hits remains constant.
Best,
Nigel
