Problem viewing site on iPhone
Автор: Malcolm P.Might someoneplease be kind enough to check a web page for me on an iPhone, at http://stonehousestudios.co.uk/short-courses.html and let me know the results here.
The page works perfectly both in the WX5 preview* and on my Android mobile (Samsung S8), but the client is complaining that she can't view it properly on her own iPhone nor on two other iPhones she's tried. She's not very technologically literate and I need to get a better idea of what might be going on to establish whether the issue lies with her or the iPhone. Unfortunately I don't have easy access to one I can test for myself.
*note that I have set an additional viewport at 320px
Specifically, she claims that the course descriptions in the product cards (the text under the date and times for each course) are not accessible and do not scroll as they should, and also that nothing happens when she taps on the downloadable pdf link just above the product cards, 'click here to see a full list of courses'.
She says that both issues are the same whether she uses the iPhone in portrait or landscape mode.
She is very unhappy at the moment and I would be very grateful for any confirmation or rebuttal of the alleged issue and for any other comments or suggestions.
Many thanks in advance.
Hello Malcolm,
On an iPhone 4S I receive a warning message on arriving at your webpage to the effect that my browser is outdated and should be upgraded... with an option to also ignore and continue.
If I continue then your page displays as shown below:
...with text superimposed on top of other texts.
The link that you refer to (full list of courses) does work for me, but it opens in a ShowBox, as opposed to downloading anything.
Hope that helps.
Kind regards,
Paul

Hello Paul,
Thanks for that. Possibly WX5 v2019 sites are no longer supported in older browsers(?), but I'll check the responsive settings again just in case. Though as noted, it is fine on my Samsung running Android 9.0.
Would anyone else perhaps with a more recent iPhone like to try, please?
Were you able to get the text within the product card to scroll at all, as that appears to be the main complaint from the client?
The pdf link opens in a showbox as there is currently an issue (reported and confirmed) with the download button not working if it is set to open in a new window, and it does need to be downloadable. That may be causing issues of its own as the showbox download button also seems not to be visible in the smaller viewport(s). I'll try going back to 'open in the same window' and see if that is an improvement.
I'm desperate to get this sorted out ASAP as the redesigned page only went up this morning and I'm getting a lot of grief from the client over it.
Thanks all.
Apologies... I don't own an iPhone myself. I checked the site on a friend's phone. Hopefully someone with another or newer iPhone will post their own findings soon!

Thanks Paul.
I have now heard back from a friend who has been able to test this on both an iPhone XR and an iPad Air and says that he can reproduce the problem on both, i.e. he is unable to access the text in the product card on either device. (He didn't check the link to the pdf so I can't confirm on that for the moment.)
Could this be brought to Incomedia's attention as a matter of urgency please, as if I cannot get it working on Apple devices very shortly I shall have to rewrite the entire page by the end of this week, if not sooner.
Many thanks.
Done!

Thanks again Paul, much appreciated.
Grasping at straws, it couldn't be something as basic as the page with the Product Catalog object needing a .php extension instead of .html, could it? There was a fleeting, generic message along the lines of 'this object requires a php page extension' that popped up when I was initially working on one of the pages, but it wasn't clear at the time which object it referred to and it vanished and hasn't recurred since. Nor can I provoke it on a test page with the Product Catalog object newly added and populated.
I can't see why it should need a php extension, and it doesn't make sense to me in that event that it would still work on an Android mobile as html but not an iPhone.
Just to add another data point, I had a further report last night from someone else who had tried it in an iPad (iOS version unknown) and found the same issue.
Hi Malcolm
I've been able to verify this.
The error was reported for v2019.2.5 and has already been corrected in v2019.2.6, which is currently in BETA
I can see that you're not currently part of the BETA update. If you wish, you might join here http://beta.websitex5.com/beta_en.html
Keep in mind that BETA versions are still under testing and it is not guaranteed that no further problems might occur.
Alternatively, you can simply wait for the update to be released officially and the problem to be fixed
I hope I've been helpful

Hi Stefano,
Thanks, that's good to know and very helpful.
I take it my 'grasping at straws' query about the Product Catalog object needing a .php page extension was indeed a red herring, at least as far as this issue is concerned? I was a bit concerned about the stray unexplained error message that had popped up a couple of times, vanished and not recurred since.
Do you have even a rough idea at present of a possible timescale for the full release of 2019.2.6 that I can advise my client and may also influence whether I risk the beta version on a live site? The current issues with Apple devices are preventing bookings for courses that start in four weeks so a quick fix is critical, whatever form it takes.
Very many thanks,
Malcolm
Hi Malcolm
Unfortunately, no precise date is available.
You mentioned that the courses start in four weeks though. I can confirm that the fix should be released shortly in the upcoming days, most probably before the upcoming 4 weeks.
Please keep in touch with us as to be sure to install the update as soon as it becomes available
Thank you
Stefano
I found the same issue on my iPhone 6S as well for your site. May I say though, the site is excellent on my mobile phone otherwise - a really nice piece of design work!

@Stefano, thank you for that information. Given the urgency and as I see that the beta version can be installed on a second machine, I'll give that a try and hope it doesn't break anything else in the process.
@Wayne, thank you for your feedback on both the problem and the site design - very much appreciated. This client is a nightmare: she leaves everything to the last possible minute and beyond and wants it done now!; keeps changing her mind after a page is finalised; has no concept of how a website works or what it is actually for (i.e. sales), so keeps coming up with daft ideas her students have suggested (design by committee is never a good idea!); and doesn't want to spend any money on it! But I guess we've all had one of those!!
There are still things I'd like to polish further, and the spring and summer term pages will in any case need redoing to match the others once the current term has ended, but the lack of allocated time and money is a constraint. Building websites is not even my main business, but I've learned a lot from working on this one and, despite a few limitations, WX5 has made it relatively easy to achieve what was needed.
