Problem with some URLs not becoming active when added to my website pages.
Автор: John R.I am having a small problem with trying to get a particular URL web link to work, and kept getting error messages either 101, or 105. The URL link I am trying to add to the test of a page on an Ancestor namely Vayro William Wilson is :- https://trove.nla.gov.au which is an important research tool from the National Library of Australia allowing you to locate newspaper reports and articles on topics and in this case a distant relative.
My Family Ancestry Website is as follows:-http://vayro.one-name.net/
The link I am trying to add works under normal circumstances, but try as I might I cannot get it to become active in the text of the page. URLs loaded before and after have been no problem and are all active. It seems to be intermittent, and has me baffled
I am using the folowing procedure the same as other links that have become successfully active
- select file or url
- select internet file
- remove http:// and enter or paste full URL in the box
- Select open in new window
- select return
Nothing seems to make this one active so would welcome assistance from any direction.
Hello John,
It works for me first time (and every time) in a test project... however, it seems to be an extremely slow loading site... either that or there is severe network congestion somewhere along the line at the present moment.
I suspect that this is what is making the problem appear 'intermittent'.
Are you adding the link in a Text Object... or something else?
Kind regards,
Paul

Hi Paul
Thanks for getting back to me and for exploring or testing it out. Yes the actual link works everytime for me also except when I attempt to add it to a page in the website. If you were to look at the webpage for Vayro William Wilson in the Distant Relatives section there is a text section which begins :- The National Library of Australia has a "Trove" link that works well and by typing Vayro Wilson, or Vay Wilson, or Vayro William Wilson in their search engine, there is a selection of information reported at various times in his life. (This covers it but is not as good as I would like it to be.)
It is in this text block that I had hoped to include the URL for https://trove.nla.gov.au to access more information on this particular distant relative.
It really is frustrating because I see it as an essential URL for any Australian relative, but for this man includes numerous articles from newspapers about his life and career.
The fact that it is slow loading is not a problem and I would have liked to include the link to newspapers but any additionl part.
I have even tried adding a new untitled page and putting just the URL in a text block, selecting OK and Save which is normal procedure and then preview, but when I test the link it fails.
By intermittent I meant that a handful of other URLs had proved problematic and failed at the test, but generally they had extension paths in the URL wheras the trove.nla is pretty basic.
I shall keep trying, hoped that it might be a software gliche
Is there anything yoiu can suggest that I try out?
Cheers
John Rennison Vayro
Unfortunately version 11 is rather old now, and as such is no longer supported by Incomedia.
But I would like to help you with this if I can, and I'm sure there are others who might also offer assistance.
I did a little more digging around in the source code of your website, and I have spotted something which I think may be relevant.
<a href="https://wikivisually.com/wiki/Vay_Wilson" target="_blank" class="imCssLink">https://wikivisually
<a href="https://wikivisually.com/wiki/Vay_Wilson" target="_blank" class="imCssLink">.com/wiki/Vay_Wilson</a>
Did you add these links 'manually' in WebSite X5, using HTML code? As opposed to using any built-in link feature?
Secondly, can you (if possible) please add the troublesome link (https://trove.nla.gov.au/) to your site somewhere and upload it to the server? We can probably help you better if we can see what is happening by looking at the source code. Please set the link in your project and make a fresh upload, even if you feel the link is not doing anything.
Many thanks!

Hi Paul
I think I have managed to sort it.
By including the URL https://nla.gov.au/ it enables the viewer to get to the main site and then there is a block link to the TROVE collection. I have included it in two pages WILLIAM IN AUSTRALIA and VAYRO WILLIAM WILSON, and both work (well they did a moment ago) in the Distant Relatives section of the website. I did note that when I first used this route that it said "glad we are re-opening the library?" So maybe it was no access at their end
With regard to the link
https://wikivisually.com/wiki/Vay_Wilson
I would imagine that I manually typed it into the appropriate block (Item 3 shown below) when preparing to add the hyperlink.
In this case the hyperlink is working OK on the VAYRO WILLIAM WILSON page, so I am not sure the point you are making?. I don't even after 40 years of computing have sufficient skills to understand the codes you are using.
I must agree that Website Version 11 is "rather old" but at 78 years old I doubt if I will get the value out of upgrading to the latest version. I seem to remember that the previous version 8 that I had been using would not let me upload the original planning for the site, and the file had to be converted to 11 by one of your team, and I then had to change a range of features that didn't appear to work like the old version and of course had to upload every image onto the new plan in V11.
Sad that the version that I am using is no longer supported by Incomedia, I suppose that is progress.
PS What is the latest version?
How much is the package?
Would the current file be compatible?
Anyway
thanks again for trying to sort it.
That's great news that you've got it sorted, John. Thanks for letting us know.
Apologies if I confused you regarding the Vay Wilson link. There are two links where there should only be one, and neither of them are formatted correctly. Yes, they open a page when you click on them, and in that sense they 'work', but they are invalid HTML and I'm pretty sure that WebSite X5 would not have generated these links. So my thinking was that there may be other malformed links in your project, and this might have had something to do with your issue.
If you're thinking of upgrading then you can get a personalised indication of costs here:
WebSite X5 offers
Projects created in version 11 can't be directly imported into the newest version... you need to go through an intermediate version first:
Conversion of projects
There are a few members on this forum who kindly offer their services and assistance when converting from one version to another, and Incomedia themselves could also assist you under the terms of their 'special conversion needs' (see the document linked to above).
However, there have been a wealth of changes and improvements to WebSite X5 over the last few years, and you might find it easier and faster to simply create a new project in version 2020 and copy/paste text, etc. from the older project to the newer one.
Good luck!
