how can i specify different shipping costs for different items within the same category?
Say i got 10 different types of boots with 3 different shipping costs.

Just helped these X5ers with their shopping cart (Not the design that is theirs)
Go and order something to see what they've done for shipping each item:

Possibility for some. But I have about 60 items for shipping cost $6, 20 for $9 etc.So I would have to specify all the $6 items in the postage option and all the $9 as well, etc. that is too much confusing for the customer.

What I did was in the shopping cart I added the postage to the "cost" and at the "payment" I put 0 for postage
Yes I do suggest that too.... But for some reason the X5ers with commercial carts specify the postage as being important!!

yes, but i always write: item $ 10 + postage $ 7. So in the cart they can always see how much the postage is
