Hi Suzanne,

The Incomedia staff don't usually work weekends but we can try and help you ourselves in the meantime?

When you say Website X5 got past loading do you mean you managed to do a full export/upload of the site in Step 5?

In the first instance try rebooting your PC, reloading your X5 project, and exporting the entire site afresh.  Keep us posted as to how you get on...  we will do our best to help!

Kind regards,

Paul

Hi Paul,

thanks for coming back to me.

tried rebooting and reloading and it didn't work. I get as far as the web site is loaded and now I get Page cannot be Displayed when I try and launch...no run time error though now which I guess is a step forward.

Any suggestions?

What's the URL of your website, Suzanne?

Can you try visiting it from a browser, instead of trying to launch the site from within WebSite X5?  Then let us know what error messages you get in the browser (if any).

A screenshot of your settings in 'Step 5 - Website Export to Internet' might also be helpful, but not essential.  Remember to obscure your FTP password before posting though.

Kind regards,

Paul

Hi Suzanne,

Thanks for the screenshot...  it was very helpful.

I have a feeling that the entry under 'Destination folder' might not be correct.  I see you have 'web' in this field  -  can you confirm if your webhost advised you to upload into that folder?

Can you delete that entry (and leave the field blank), then try to move to the next step by pressing the 'Next' button.

Having done that it would be helpful to see another screenshot at that point, which should show the files and folders which currenty exist in the root folder of your server.

However, you might not even need to post the screenshot, because you may find if you try another upload that everything then just works.

I think you are uploading into the wrong destination folder at the moment.  We want to try and put the X5 files into the root of your public folder on the server.

There is another issue which might be affecting things here, but let us know how you get on with these suggestions first...  and try and post another screenshot of the second screen if the upload doesn't work.

Don't worry...  we'll get it sorted  Smile

Kind regards,

Paul

Hello again Suzanne,

Thanks for submitting the second screenshot.

This is now looking very much like it has something to do with the other issue I referred to.  I'm 95% certain that the problem lies with your webhost, and am also quietly confident that it has nothing whatsoever to do with your configuration of your X5 project.

Who is your webhost?  Is it 1ANetworks?  Or is it someone else?

At the moment the 'nameservers' for your domain (theblucatcompany.co.uk) are set to 1ANetworks.  However, their own company website is down (never a good sign!) and their server does not seem to be responding.  When did you last speak with them?  They may need to make some DNS changes at their end to ensure that your domain points correctly to your webspace.

Alternatively, it may be that you have recently changed webhosts and forgotten to change the nameservers?  If so, then your new webhost should be able to help you do that...  or you can probably do it yourself via your online control panel.  I will advise if I possibly can.  But I would need to know who the host is first.

Nameservers and DNS settings are extremely important for any website as they act like a sort of giant address directory, and ensure that any visitors entering your domain name into their browser are connected with your unique webspace.  If the nameserver/DNS info is incorrect or broken then the web site 'look-up' will fail.  I feel this is what is happening in your own case.

Let us know who the current host is and we will go from there.

Kind regards,

Paul

Hi

i'm with UKIP.

Interestingly I thought it may be a problem with their setup of my account (due to previous issues with my email and problems with the original server address they gave me for the domain login). I sent them an email earlier today to ask if they could confirm my account is set up correctly but have not heard back yet.

You have been fabulous and very patient with a noobie like me

kind regards

Suzanne

No worries Suzanne, you're more than welcome.

I hope they manage to resolve the matter quickly for you.

If you don't get satisfaction, then I thoroughly recommend a UK company called Vidahost as an alternative.  They typically respond to any requests for support within 10 minutes (yes, that's 10 minutes!), and they are exceptionally friendly and helpful, with a very deep understanding of all the technical issues.  I've never been happier with a webhost.

Let us know if you have any further queries.

All the best,

Paul

Hi Paul,

back again. Thats been sorted by the webhost (went back to a previous contact who got it done straightaway)

Now the website will show if I type the URL in the Internet Explorer Bar but not if I putwww.theblucatcompany.co.ukor 'the blucat company' into a search engine like Google/Bing etc.

Am I missing a step somewhere?

thanks

Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,

Glad your site is now up and running   Smile

It's normal for a new site not to show up in search engine results.  This is simply because the search engines don't yet know about your new site!  You must first submit your site details to each search engine in turn, before they will consider crawling your site and including it in their search results index.

Each search provider has their own sign-up page, etc  -  I've linked to the Google and Bing ones below:

http://www.google.co.uk/submit_content.html

http://www.bing.com/toolbox/submit-site-url

Just follow the instructions...  you'll need to sign up for a free Google Webmaster Tools account, which is a great idea anyway as it provides loads of useful information on who is accessing your site, and how frequently, etc.

Note that even after you have submitted your site details it may take anything from a few weeks to a few months before your site starts to show up in search results!

Incidentally, I notice that your site is not yet set up to redirect visitors who do not enter the 'www' prefix in the browser address bar...  e.g.

http://www.theblucatcompany.co.uk links to your site, whereas http://theblucatcompany.co.uk currently does not.

I highly recommend that you address this issue.  Your host should be able to help you with it, or there may be options in your webhost control panel where you can setup the redirection yourself.

If not, then you can use something called an .htaccess file placed in the root of your server, to redirect visitors automatically if they omit the 'www' prefix.  Let us know if you need any further info.

All the best with your new site  Smile

Paul
