How to create a log in for one of my file  en

Hi,

I'm creating a page with my articles and files for people to open it. To open a file (.pdf) I created some buttons, linked to files on my PC, so people can open those and download it if they want.

How can I protect this access? Cause I want people to access with a log-in. I don't know how to use the log-in (it doesn't link to a specific source).

I thought about creating an hidden page named Download linked to the button but, again, I don't know how I can protect the access to an hidden page.

I read in the community how to do it through the web host, etc. But, I'm wondering if there's a simple way to do that.

Thank you very much guys!

The login is protected by page only. So if you want a file to be protected you need to set the download or acces to that file on 1 page and then lock this page in step3.

acces will then be asked and only users you have created in step1 Advanced TAB, acces management, will be granted acces.

Thanks for your answer!

I'm using the EVO version.

So, I'd like my clients to access with the same login credentials, so I'll simply tell them how to login to that page. Is that possible creating manually only ONE universal user?

(that is what I read: Manual Registration: the website administrator creates the users and sends them their credentials for accessing locked pages. There may be a registration form on the website, but the actual registration is completed by the administrator working on the project in WebSite X5. This is the default option in the Evo edition.)

If possible, how can I do that? Should I create one user profile in Group 1 with my details? For example, I choose a fake Name and Surname, a password and my secondary email address to receive the link to register and have Username and Password to give to my client. Could that work?

Then, in the hidden and locked "Downloads" page, I add buttons to open/download files. Correct?

Moreover, in SiteMap Settings, should I remove that hidden and locked page from the sitemap? I read it could prevent content to be found by search engine.

Thank you very much

Fabio

Hello Fabio,

Yes, well not entilrely :)  ....

Here a small step by step:

Create a user in group1,

set any information you like.

for instance login name acces last name, is not importand, fill in lastname it's more for you own oversight in case you have more user's. the email adres is importand but does not need to be a real email adres, type in what you like use your website name in it for instance but it needs to be a correct mail format so with a dot and an at in it.

Again it's up to you! Then set also password.

Now create a page, set on that page your download object (your pdf or your download button), lock that page, select the user you have just made.

That's it, he only thing to do is to mail the people you want acces the login credentials (email adress and password)

I you have previously made a page then see to it that this page is removed (if it is an html page) from your site. x5 will not remove previous pages, so if you use an earlyer page and it does not contain the locked option it will stay available if a customer would have a direct link to it.

A page made that is locked has always a PHP extension. you can see the files on your website by clicking the ipath name (top right in step5) if you see there 2 pages with same name, like for instance you have named the page, download _pdf, and you see download_pdfxxxx.html and download_pdfxxxx.php  then remove the file with your page name that ends on html!

Let me know if you need more help.

Thanks Andre,

so, do you mean that the Username will be the email address I'll choose (a fake one)? I thought the Username would be the Name in user settings.

Moreover, in SiteMap Settings, should I remove that hidden and locked "Downloads" page from the sitemap? I read it could prevent content to be found by search engine.

Thanks again for your time!

No the user name is just a name so you have a overview of who can acces the page, no more then that.

the login is the email adres. So the email adress you set will be the login name the website viewer must fill in.

And yes you could set the sitemap to not show these items.
