Add a user forum to my website

I would like to add a public/user forum to my X5 site. I understand there is not an X5 object to do that, but I wondered if anyone has found a workable solution and can share it with me/us?

There are free forum software options that you can install on your own web space, e.g.

Or you can use a forum service provider that takes care of everything. However, these almost always cost money and are often expensive.
