When using the Image Gallery, can I select the images via a database. ie send an SQL query to a database which will select the appropriate records on the database and then find the images linked to these records and display them back in the gallery.

No, there is no such functionality incorporated in the WebSite X5 Gallery Object. Images must be added to the image list manually.
