Upload to internet difficulties  en

Autor: Sam S.

When trying to upload to internet, it asks as optional 'destination folder'.  The hosting company gave me cpanel and allows to publish multiple websites in that single cpanel.

My understanding is that in cpanel, all website files go to /public_html/ folder.  Then you create subfolders ie 'mydomain.com', 'myotherdomain.com'. etc.

So in the destination folder, i input "/public_html/mydomain.com".  But this gives me an error message.

The hosting tech support is puzzled as to why it does not work.  All the parameters are confirmed correct.

1. In the pop up, if I click 'no', will it proceed to upload the files?  And to what folder will the files be uploaded to?

2. If I leave the "destination folder" blank, where will the files go?

In your intructions you have this:

"The folder within which you publish your Site should contain an index.html file. In any case, if you're not sure which folder to publish your site in, contact your Provider and ask them to confirm: not all folders in the Server can be used for publication."

Any bearing?

Thanks

if you bought webspace you will have to give up a name, like: mywebsite.com

Then you get an /public_html from you provider, if you use the icon in x5 for the webspace you should be able to find this folder.

Then uplad your site in that folder and your site should show up in: http:// (www.) mywebsite.com

if you create a folder in /public_html like: myfolder  and place a project in there then it will show up on internet as: mywebsite.com/myfolder  you don't need to add .com that would be overdoing it, but if you could make a folder like myfolder.com, then the website would be: mywebsite.com/myfolder.com  i gues that is noyt aloud, although some providers might allow it, that depends on the rules set by the provider.

if you leave folder blank you are probably not aloud to upload. select the public_html folder, then upload!

Andre,

Thanks for your quick response.  But I am sorry, I am not able to understand what you are describing.  Could you please elaborate?

I am concerned where the files would go.

Thanks

If you specified this in the destination directory....

/public_html/mydomain.com

then the files are all uploaded in this subfolder!

Now it depends on where in your domain the root directory is directed. This can only be seen and set in the provider account. There should be \public_html at the root directory and if you want to direct to the subdirectory, you have to set /public_html/mydomain.com to this subdirectory.

Then you can upload in the target directory when exporting to the Internet only your normal domain specified and without errors.

Andre E,

I did what you were describing above.  Clicked the icon in X5, I found the folder /public_html/mydomain.com.

But when you start to upload, it give this pop-up: "The selected server or destination folder does not match the website url. Do you want to set it now?  yes/no/cancel.

Then it highlights the URL and Destination folder.  (The URL is: https://mydomain.com)

If yes, it goes back to allow you to change your parameters.

What happens then if I press 'No'?  Will it proceed to upload it to that folder? Or to what folder it will go?

Or if I leave the Destination Folder blank and proceed, where will the files go?

Anyone out there familier with using CPanel that had experience with this issue using WX5?

Most of the youtube videos shows just dragging the files into /public_html/mydomain.com folder.

1. Can I do this?  and which files?

2. When updating, how would I know which files to drag?

Thanks all,  would really appreciate a solution.

In your case, the destination directory where you upload does not match the URL of the website.
This is what you need to check.

Enter the following in the URL of the website and see if the error still comes...

https://www.mydomain.com/mydomain.com

So your real domain!

Furthermore, the hosting company is wondering if there is an issue with the WX5.

I just tried having no destination file,  and it gave me the same error

I found where the problem is!!!

It is in my WX5 current version.

I used my older version = 10 pro, and was able to upload using the same connection parameters I have been trying on this current version.  It also worked in version 11 pro.

Could this be fixed immediately?

I have literally been back and forth with the Hosting company's tech everyday for several hours each day and would really appreciate if this can be corrected immediately.

Thanks

In the old versions can no longer be fixed or update. In the new version it works fine for us. It can only come from the settings or the hoster!

Hello Sam

You can safely click No and the software will upload the website anyway.

That being said, some specific functionalities might not work right, like the automatic highlight in the Menu Object of the current page.

Can you please attach here a screenshot of Step 5 for me to check? Feel free to remove the FTP data but leave the URL and Destination folder

I will provide advice then

Thank you

Stefano

Hello Stefano

Thanks for responding.

This is what happens.

I also mentioned above that when I tried this on V10 pro and V11 pro and uploaded some uncompleted projects, I did not get this pop up on all the uploads.  It just start uploading.

Also, after uploading it by selecting 'No', this is what appears when I open the website.

I have to click the  domain to open up the site.

How do I eliminate this?

Thanks,

Sam

Andreas,

What is deleting the backslash supposed to do?

I tried it and it still does both described above.

Rio et al,

Yes, I had already tried it as you suggested.

With the folder set just to: public_html, all of the uploaded files went to that folder combining with all the other files from cpanel.

Then if I upload other website projects into the same folder - what a mess will that be.

But if I upload it to: /public_html/mydomain.com, (which what I understand is the proper way to do it),  the problem is that when I open up the website, it gives me this: an index page - (please see my response to Stefano above).

Still looking for solutions.

Thanks

Hello Sam

You should NOT upload other projects into the same folder.

If you want to make sub-projects you should make sub-folders and upload the sub-projects to their sub-folders.

That is the way to do it.

In your mydomain-com you should have the project you want to be the project for your domain.

The sub-domain projects you can then have as full projects in the sub-domains and/or you can link to them from the "head" domain.

Hi John S et al,

Thanks, I am well aware of the importance of having specific folders for each projects.

In my post above, see the destination folder '1'.

But after upload and when you open the site, you get this: see  '2' below.

Please access callexch.com and you'll see what I mean.  You then have to click 'callexch.com' to enter site.  (I have uploaded a test site in that domain).

I am puzzled as to why it causes this.

I had purchased a Reseller Hosting package. which it included WHM and several Cpanels.

So in one Cpanel, I plan to upload several domains/websites.

And under /public_html/ have a folder for each domain.

The hosting company's tech support guy said that the reason that the 'index page' appears, is because you uploaded it to /public_html/callexch.com.  He said that if you just upload it to /publick_html/, you wont see that index page.

I tried what he suggested, and sure enough that 'index page' did not appear.  But I know better, as you said, each folder per project.

I can see that it will be ok if you are uploading only 1 project.

What is the proper way to do this?  So that you can have several websites managed under one cpanel and not have that 'index page' appear?

Thanks all

Have you ever tried to connect to your server with Filezilla?
Where exactly do you get there? This is usually your root directory.
If you see "public_html" as directory, then you have to enter \public_html\www.callexch.com in the target directory. But if you see www.callexch.com in Filezilla, then you only need to specify \www.callexch.com in the destination directory.

In the URL of the website you have to check if you have to change something in your hoster account, otherwise you will only get to your page if you enter https:\\www.callexch.com\www.callexch.com.
I hope you have activated a certificate, because otherwise you can't put "https" in front of your URL.

Andreas,

No, I have not tried Filezilla.

With WX5, the export , I believe, should be sufficient.  But why am I getting this pop up below?

Stefano in an earlier post said to click 'no' and it should upload - I tried it and it uploaded.  But why does this pop up happen?  Why doesn't the file and url match?  This has not happened in my older pro versions.

1.  Any explanation?  What setting is not being done correctly?

2.  What I am learning about uploading directly on cpanel, is by just simply 'dragging and dropping' it into your destination folder.  But where do I find the files in WX5?  Any instructions? And what about uploading updated files only?

Thanks

If you do an "export to a drive", then you have all the upload files that you need to upload. However, this method is not standard for uploading!

The message comes because the URL of the website does not match the target directory or your domain is not set to the target directory entered. It is also possible that you have not activated a certificate for your domain (https)

Hello Sam

Unfortunately it is very hard to provide such an example because it differs for every webhosting.

However, by visiting your website at https://callexch.com/ you actually get redirected to https://callexch.com/callexch.com/

This would mean that this is the URL that you should insert the URL field not to receive this error

Try this way and let me know if it works this way

Thank you

Stefano
