Split Large Project  en

Is there any document that describes how to organize and work with splitting a large project into sections?

I don't see anything in the guides or the online manual (2021.5 latest update)

Thank you

Adrian

Hi Adrian!

You will basically need to:

  • duplicate the project, for instance make 2 copies if you want to split it into two subprojects (please don't forget to keep an iwzip backup copy of the whole project, just in case).
  • keep on each project only the necessary pages.
  • export one project to the server main folder as you usually do and the other to a subfolder, like you would do with multi-language websites (e.g. project A > main folder > www.site.com ; project B > subfolder /project-B > www.www.site.com/project-B)
  • Set a link on the menu of each project so to connect the projects to one another (you can do this by adding a new level).

I really hope this helps, in case of doubts please let me know.

Thank you both.

Are there any other considerations? Such as when a site is using the shopping cart?

My site is I think is about 500 pages - several sitemap generators report 1001 pages but that includes the pdf's, one on each web page.

I do get a notice occasionally that the project has too many pages, but I am under what has been commented here that about 1000 should be the limit?

Where do I place the new level - is it set to "hidden"?  The level on project 1 refers to any page of project 2 / and the level on project 2 refers to any page of project 1?  Or there is some specific page to link?

Also, does only one project have the "home" page? I thought it was not possible to delete the home page?  I assume the home page should only be on one project?

No documentation?  this is just a lucky random "bug" that happens to work or is officially sanctioned / supported?

Thank you again, Adrian  (abthermal.com)

Adrian, this is the best way to split a project (& the advise came from Incomedia).

Each project will have it's own home page, they can be identical, different or you could even hide the one in the subfolder, create a level called home and link it to the primary project.

The levels are not hidden, for instance, if you had a level called parts and underneath were 200 pages each with their own part, the level called parts would remain in the primary project and link to the sub project parts level with all the pages under it.

How much content is in your website?

Would it be practical (ie not too much content) to combine pages and use anchors to move between virtual pages on single pages?

My project is 2.2G and the export zip is 114MB without any includes. My 2.3G 8 core i9 16G Mac book pro takes 2 1/2 minutes to open the file (running parallels in default config).

X5 occasionally "freezes", becomes unresponsive to mouse and keyboard for several minutes, then resumes.

Project is 550 pages in about 20 levels.  Not all pages have a cart card yet, but each will eventually.

Maybe one project should be everything except the cart and the second project should be just the cart?

I'm not sure I understand yet how the link between the projects should be configured.

I think I understand how each project could have a home page - its because it really doesnt matter if both home pages exist - they are in sync when you split the project - its only if you change something on one and not the other that the user would see a difference.

I save the export zip wth a new date almost daily, so I have lots of backups if the "split the project" fails.

Adrian, as you say, you have multiple iwzip backups. Make a couple of copies and have a play, it will all make sense and you will quickly realise problems and hopefully solutions.
