New fun message from Google Lighthouse about non-crawlable links.  en

Looks like Google Lighthouse just switched some things around for your page scores and how you are doing. I just noticed this message: Uncrawlable link. It is telling me one of the two culprits is: #imGoToCont

I use the breadcrumb navigation on my pages. They are set as links. And they work. Never had this message before from Google. But I decided to test a page that does not have the breadcrumbs on it. And the same error message came up. For anyone who wants to test this on my page in question, please use: https://www.eclectic-ware.com/about.html

When you use Lighthouse, under the SEO report, it shows the two links that aren't crawlable. The Pinterest one I could possibly understand. Pinterest is in its own world. But the #imGoToCont which highlights to the left of my page title in an H2 font, there is no link there. Why would Google think that there is a link there? It even shows a size measurement, and it is hinting that a link exists where the Ab is in About Eclectic-ware. This is very strange, even for Google.

I did do an upload today, and this is the first time in a week plus that I decided to do a quick look of a few pages in Lighthouse. My SEO score was always 100 for most every page with only a few pages at 98 or 99. Now a 93 is coming up because of this link thing.

I am not hugely concerned unless this is a growing issue. And Google has a way of creating chaos for us.

Any ideas?

When someone does address this, please check out if the software is creating any kind of link in the page background to the left of the page area. When I tested this on my homepage, it highlighted a very tall section of the page background from the page title to the end of the first paragraph. Something crazy is going on.

Hi John,

I am having the same problem with my site, not sure why at this stage. It looks like x5 is adding something thats not there.

Hello John,

The link referred to is there for the benefit of screen reading software, and to assist those with visual impairments who 'read' the site using such utilities rather than view it in the traditional sense.

Without the link some screen readers might first read out the entire contents of the menu (and sub-menus) before proceeding to read the content of the page.  This would be extremely tedious and frustrating for the visually impaired, especially with respect to large sites (such as your own) with complex menus.

I'll ask Incomedia to provide an official comment regarding this.

Personally I am paying less and less attention to what Google is doing nowadays...  it has become apparent to me over the last year or two that their automated systems are riddled with bugs.  YMMV.  But I am now taking many of their 'warnings' with a large pinch of salt.

Kind regards,

Paul

Thank you, Paul. So this link that we do not see is actually a step toward the ADA compliance thing? On some websites, a little handicap symbol pops up usually in the bottom left of the screen too, giving a menu of options.

So this link will go unnoticed by all, it is actually for equipment to detect and then use.

I agree about Google. They have so many of us going in circles, it is ridiculous. I guess as long as we all obey the main rules and do not try to trick our users, we just have to let our websites evlove and eventually attract those masses. There is just so much competition now and way too many SEO and PPC games going on that it is more frustrating than rewarding. We all have to watch our tails, or long tails, too many people trying to take our money, and delivering nonsense for it.
