Programme failure lost saved files
Autore: Adrian WoodI tried to load my website to update content and when I went to Open all I see is a row of black boxes with names underneath that relate to past projects.None for 2024
I have searched for Backups and saved files and cannot find any for the current year.
I have a license 24/25 and all the information about my current version.
I saw that there is a new version update and went to install this only to find that in doing so an error occurred and now the WX5 will not load at all.
I am assuming that I will need to download and reinstall using my license but cannot see where to do this.
Although I make a point of saving the project each time I use it, the files seem not to exist.
I have restarted my PC
All to no avail. Suggestions and help gratefully received.
Website is www.focalview.co.uk and www.westridgewaychurches.co.uk
Adrian, on the top right of this website, click on your name and select "My Profile"
Here you will see options to retrieve your license number, download WX5, etc
Please report back here if you still have issues after the re-install.
Even if you can retrieve your projects, please be aware that you should never trust backup. When you are up and running we should discuss the advantages of selecting export project to create an iwzip which is a bullet proof form of backup.

Hello
Thank you for this so far:
I have now successfully reinstalled EVO
The black boxes are still there with no image of the websites.
These are all previous versions which I will delete once I have found my current saved files.
I have found previous IWZip files but none of these are current.
When I save a file from the latest update each time, what is the file extension called?
Please tell me about the bullet proof method.
Thank you
Hello Adrian,
it may be that you changed the directory for project storage at some point, and it was reset with the reinstall.
By default the software stored projects at C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 - Evo, could you please use the file search on your computer to look for a file called project.iwprj2, and check whether any instance of this file can be found elsewhere?
This file is contained in each project folder.

Thank you
I have found the location of the projectfile for the current project now and on opening the WX5 screen I have treid the import but I am not sure what to import. I can see all the files as per the attached but when the import had completed I could not see the project to open.

Although I have installed a fresh version I am now getting this error each time I try to open a project....

Hi Again
Following your advice I have found the files in Docs/Incomedia but can you tell me what I should be looking for to load the project?
Do you think I should reinstall again because of the error message?
I have files going back 20 years now since I have been working with WX5 so I have some clearing out to do as well!

Update
I have deleted all back projects now and have two to use as templates if I cannot upload the backups.
I need to know which files I need to upload now and why the boxes are still black with no preview image.
Many thanks
Adrian, you say you have found your projects. If this is the case, have you set WX5 to that default directory in preferences (bottom left)?
This default folder should be the one in which you found your project folders.
Once this folder is set correctly, you will see the available projects to choose from.
If your project will not open you may have a backup. Highlight your project and select backup. Select the backup you require and select redo.
Good luck - unless you have manually opted to create a backup regularly it is possible you will not have a useful backup
Sadly even if you have a recent backup this may not restore your file because the inbuilt backup does not include all required files.
This unreliable backup is the reason the iwzip is recommended (step 5, export project)

Thank you this has been very helpful.
So I have done these stages:
I have Incomedia/Website X5 Evo/Backup/Uploaded files and two versions of a second site which I can also not open. Please see pdf attached.
Following instructions, I
scrolled down through the uploaded files until I came to the most recent. This is actually not the most recent but simply the most recent I could find. As per instructions, I changed the name to project.iwprj.
I am also advised to make a copy of this file but I am not told where to put it. As soon as I changed the name, the file vanished and when I go up to the top of the folder I find it but with 2 after the extension ( project.iwprj2) You will notice that there are other files with the same 2 at the end. I tried to remove the 2 but was told that this would change the extension and therefore the file would be unreadable.
I am assuming that the files with 2 after are all copies.
I open WX5 panel for Open and go to Preferences.
The screen is blank.
I open Preferences and check the following path: C:\Users\wood\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 - Evo\Backup\
I added the project.iwprj2 and clicked OK
Nothing happens
I tried to import from Docs/Incomedia/WebsiteX5-Evo/Backup.... I am told there are no items to match my search.
I know that the Backup for Focalview (fv) in Docs/incomedia/WebsiteX5-evo/focalviewbackup1224/Backup/ is the one I want -
Can you see an error in the files? Are the extensions wrong?
When I use Import on the Open screen does that only apply to iwzip? If I follow the path to Docs/Incomedia etc. there is no Iwzip so I do not know what to click on.
Your further support gratefully received
Many thanks
Re Attachments: I see I cannot attach a PDF but only one image at a time so I have broken up the original PDF into three images which means I have to post these one by one to you. This seems a crazy way to have to do this but there we are.

Adrian, the correct path for your projects appears to be Docs/incomedia/WebsiteX5-evo, so set that in preferences
When you select open in WX5 you should see each of your projects (each project is actually a folder containing all required files as well as a backup folder). You should be able to select your project and open it. If it will not open then select backup as indicated above and attempt to redo the project.
Unfortunately this will only work if the required support files are still in the project folder (not deleted) and not corrupt.
Please advise if you succeed
FYI iwprj2 files are copies of the project iwprj file. Whilst this is the most important file it is not the only file required to be present to open a project and worse than this, other files can become corrupt (hence my distrust of the built in backup proceedure and reliance on iwzip files created by step 5, export project.) The import option is for importing iwzip files.
Adrian
Assuming my above instructions fail, and based on your screenshot where it appears you have manually copied one of the backup files
Rename project.iwprj2 as project.iwprj
Set the default folder to document\incomedia\websitex5-evo
Now when you run wx5 and select open you should see focalviewbackup1224 as the project name. If all files are intact, with luck the project will open.
(you appear to have a large number of backups, assuming this is the backup folder inside the project you are trying to recover, others appear to be far more recent than your project.iwprj2 dated 07/01/2023
This could be moved up to the parent directory and renamed project.iwprj)
Hello Adrian,
yes, the Import function only detects IWZIP files.
It is correct for the extension to be iwprj2, iwprj was the extension in older versions. Where did you read about the extension without the 2? I will check whether it is a guide that must be updated.
The path specified in the Preferenced must be the directory where other project folders are stored, rather than the Backup folder of a specific project, as the software will be checking for different files, so you would not have any result by setting Backup as the path.
As Esahc mentioned, your project storage folder seems to be the default one, Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 - Evo, so make sure to set this path in the Preferences.
This should allow you to display "focalviewbackup1224" in the list of available project, please try to open it.
Should you get an error, you can try using one of the backup iwprj2 files, following these steps:
1) Close the software.
2) Rename the current project.iwprj2, calling it for example project2.iwprj2 or project---.iwprj2, as long as it is not called projecy anything should work. You can also temporarily move the file elsewhere.
3) Order the iwprj2 files in the Backup folder by date of last change, so that you can try with the most recent ones initially.
4) Copy and paste the file into the main project folder, and rename it project.iwprj2, just like the original file.
5) Open the software and try to open the project again.

Thank you
I was looking for generic help and found this below and was trying to follow it. I may have the version wrong. I have Evolution, I know that. There is no 2 mentioned there that I can see hence my wrong assumption.
I will now try to follow your advice.
https://helpcenter.websitex5.com/it/post/47713
For Evolution 10
Start Explorer and open the path you previously found in the Preferences. In the "WebSite X5 v10 - Evolution" folder you will find as many folders as many projects you have actually in WebSite X5. Open the folder of the project you want to restore.
Inside the folder Backup you need to select one of the present files which you want to restore (usually a recent file is chosen). The files name will be similar to this "uploaded_20130624115544.iwprj" (20130624115544 stands for year-month-day-minute-seconds). Rename the selected file into "project.iwprj".
Last but not least, copy the renamed file "project.iwprj".
Inside the previous folder. In this way it will substitute the old one. Now it is possible to select the project again and to open it.

Hi
I have used the following path:
Documents/Incomedia/WebsiteX5-Evobackup1224
I made this path in Preferences.
No result
I tried again with \ at the end
No result
I have checked again that the project is the recent version I want to import.
Question: Is Preferences the same as Import only not as a zip package?
Does the path above stop at the folder with all the files in and then by default open the project.iwprj2.iwprj?
Is this the same as opening a web page by pointing to an HTML file within the folder?
So I know that;
The project is correct in the focalviewbackup1224 folder is correct as per advice but setting this in preferences does two things: 1 makes a zip import of my second web project disappear from the screen and 2, still does nothing.
I then received the attached Error message about having to reinstall the software. Whilst looking at this image, could you please note the number of backup files there are and does that matter and if so should I delete any?
I will now reinstall the software making sure that I fully delete the current version
Hello Adrian,
the path set in the Preferences should be C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 - Evo (only the highlighted part here.
This means that the software will check for all project folders within Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 - Evo and display them in the list of available projects.
The amount of backups should only affect the size of the project's IWZIP if you choose to generate it while including backups.

Supplementary question please: Would it make sense to create an IWZIP folder to import; assuming I can?
Hello,
it would be possible to manually create the IWZIP, but if the project's files are corrupt in some way it is likely for an error to occur regardless, so I would first of all like to understand what exactly happens when trying to open the project after correctly setting it up in the right path.

Hello
I have checked the correct version again - correct
The path is Documents/Incomedia/Website X5 - Evo
As per your advice, the backup is in the folder focalviewbackup1224 but the actual preferences path leaves this off.
Open shows the preview image but nothing else happens.
I have:
Renamed the project file to project2 as suggested
copied the most recent version in the Backup file and pasted it into the main folder
Renamed this file project.iwprj2 and have deleted the project2 version
Restarted the software
Opened the screen and Preferences and made the path Documents/Incomedia/Website X5 - Evo
Clicked on Open and the screen shows the project preview image, ie. the Home Page of the site.
Double click on the image and I get the window about updating to the new version.
The window Initializing Project files comes up. Eventually the site appears but this is not the correct one. I think I can deal with that but my disk size is too small so I will direct the Preferences to my M drive which has a duplicate of Website X5 - Evo. In this folder are three more containing the Backups. From what you say then the new path would be M/Incomedia/WebsiteX5 - Evo but this would now open all three projects because the software will look for the Project files. Do I have that correct?
Also I keep getting extra Backups which overload the disk space and the one I think I am loading is still the wrong one. How do I stop these extra Backups automatically when I can easily creat a Backup in a separate folder each time I need to?
Thank you for your patience but one of the sites is for the church and I have to update services each week.
Autore
So I have now discovered how to stop the Backups and have finally loaded all the current sites I had lost.
In the end I used the M drive and everything worked.
This is all thanks to you and your patience. WebsiteX5 has been my website software since the 90s when I first met Franco in London. I have to say that although I have made many websites over the years I have concentrated on the content rather than how the technical side works: something I am sure you can see from my fumblings.
Thank you again and best wishes for Christmas
