is it possible to insert a image into the background of a template that I selected from your gallery and am using for my site.

You can, replace the image of the one you use in the galery of x5. Make a backup of the original picture !
You can find the templates in the same directory as x5 is installed on your harddrive.
Or design your own template useng the data of the x5 template !
This way you don't have to replace files....
