Duplicate coppies of uploaded PDF files

I have multiple links in the website to the same PDF. But when uploaded there are multiple copies of the same PDF with additional characters in the file name. How do I stop the additional files being created.
I think there was an article on this, but have not been abe to find it.

To avoid this, we have created a separate directory (or subdomain) on the server and upload the pdf files with filezilla.
Within websitex5 we have now used the link for "file or URL on the Internet".
Thus, within the project the pdf file is not integrated and not duplicated. Advantages: smaller project, shorter loading times, updating the pdf files without project editing (as long as the file name remains the same!).
