Joint working on website  en

Hello

I am looking for advice:

I am asked to help start a church website.

I have purchased web space account plus domain for said site.

I want them to manage the site on the day to day and I will be training them and providing support.

I already have my own WX5 account.

I want them to have their own so that I am not using my own server space or becoming too involved when the software can easily be understood and content managed by them - with my initial support.

If I buy them their own software, can I access it when required? Obviously I will have all the access permissions and I want to repair, add, create etc. remotely from my home.

Can I use my own software to do this?

Will I need to have a separate installation if that is possible so that I can access the church site as though I was the vicar.

I am thinking that if I have a file on my system called church for example and if I put the correct upload details into the Export screen databox, then the file will upload to the church site but I shall need to see all their site as I work.

Clearly I am confused by the various options I think are there but I would like advice as to how I set this all up.

Many thanks

Adrian

Adrian, I have developed a number of websites for clients that wish to / need to manage their own projects. I developed the sites in accordance with their wishes and then handed over the project as an iwzip which they imported and managed after a brief amount of tuition. I also provide ongoing support whenever they have difficulty.

Be aware that storing the source project in the cloud so that both parties can work on it will lead to frustration. . . , but working on the clients PC with the likes of Teamviewer works quite well.

The next post will have more details of my experience which may assist you.

Be aware that you and your client must have the same version of WX5 (if they can only afford Evo you must use Evo).

If you wish to access their machine I would STRONGLY recommend going full remote (do not just access their project files) with the likes of TeamViewer, Logmein, etc. Working across a network or peer to peer from a remote location has too much latency, even working from an external USB device frequently causes crashes, as does working on a folder being synchronised by one drive and the likes. Full remote access lets you use their version of the software on their own PC with all source files (pictures, documents, etc) available.

When remote access is not reasonable (major upgrades, new features, funtionality, template, etc), simply have the client create an iwzip (step 5, export project). This can come to you on a thumb drive, cloud storage (google drive, drop box, etc) or any other means you like. Simply import it, work on it, return it, import on their PC and away they go again.

OR

I have a couple of clients who do not own WX5. There is some funtionality built into Professional that allows some page content to be updated and maintained (although I have not yet taken that route). My clients need to maintain a calendar of events and a blog. To date blogger and the gmail calendar have met all requirements and are embedded in the project with the advantage that they have nominated a number of people to maintain both. I continue to manage the project and the site as required (eg once a week one has a newsletter), but at all times their changing blog content and calendar of events is up to date. They also use the facebook optional object to provide even more content to the site.

Have fun, it will work just fine!

@ Esahc

Thank you very much for your excellent advice!

I will be soon having the same questions like above.

One thing I did not quite get - when you said:
"If you wish to access their machine, I would STRONGLY recommend going full remote (do not just access their project files) with the likes of TeamViewer, Logmein, etc."

***

Did you mean that the administrator should open remotely the installed WSX5 on the client PC (presumably with the TeamViewar or a similar program) - and working normally like someone on the client side would do?

Thank you in advance for the clarification of that sentence!

With Teamviewer, Logmein, etc once connected you see the client screen and have total control of the PC just as if sitting in front of their PC.
