Image files on server modified names  en

If I look at the images folder on the server, there are added versions of the same image file with modified filenames.

I recently wiped the server (last month) and reloaded the project, as sometimes there were 10, 20, even for some images hundreds of versions (it was taking a lot of server space!).

But now they are back and starting to grow in number again.

Why is X5 adding these files?  Can I delete the extra modified files?

They also show up in my SEO site auditing tool as not having Alt text - so if the SEO tool sees them then google also sees them.  Bad news.

As always, your ideas are helpful.

Adrian, I am guessing, but many of these files appear to be created based on your choice of optional object, for instance a slide show that has thumbnails, rather that generate a thumbnail from the original image for display WX5 creates thumbnails and various size images then stores them to achieve faster web display. There was also a post here recently that suggested that if we remove/delete an object that contains images before first deleting every image used in the object, then those images become orphaned and remain within the project and so are constantly uploaded even though not required or referenced on the website.

I don't see how these images can be suppressed without Incomedia looking at measures it has implemented in the past to improve performance. With totally redundant images (orphans) I have had some minor successes by creating an iwzip (step 5 export project) and then importing that project, although I am hopeful Incomedia can improve the performance of this "cleaning" technique.
