The most important NEW function we have added to this 9.1 version of WebSite X5 is in the Gallery Object. You will now be able to find HTML5 and CSS3 Galleries amongst the Javascript Galleries in the Gallery list.
The available HTML5 Galleries are exactly the same as the Flash: this means that you have the opportunity to customize the same settings/properties and to gain more or less the same visual results even if the technology behind them is very different.

At the moment, there are more Flash Galleries in the list, but they are not compatible with tablets and mobile devices with iOS operating systems, like iPhone® and iPad®. HTML5 Galleries do not require plug-ins to work correctly and they are perfectly supported by Apple devices (see the example: http://youtu.be/tq3JtFqE6As ).

How can I convert my Flash Gallery into the new HTML5 Gallery?

It is extremely easy to convert your Flash Gallery into HTML5: simply open your Gallery Object and look into the Style tab, then open the Gallery Type drop down list and change it. You have to choose the corresponding gallery type, let’s say for example that you have chosen the "Horizontal Gallery – Flash" you are going to have to choose the "Horizontal Gallery – HTML5"...and the job is done!

If you are changing from Flash Gallery to the HTML5, you need to remember that:

  • The HTML5 Galleries will work perfectly on Browsers that do not support HTML5 and CSS3, but there could be a different visualization of the effects you have chosen for each image. In this case, the effect you have chosen will automatically be changed into the Fade effect.
  • You will not find all the Flash Gallery effects amongst the HTML5 Gallery effects:  the unavailable effects will automatically be exchanged with the Fade effect.
  • The Zoom and Position image settings do not change in the HTML5 Galleries.

Why should I convert my Gallery into HTML5?

As explained previously, the Flash Galleries have more effects in them, but if you have to choose between Flash and HTML5 you must know that you will gain considerable advantages by choosing HTML5, such as:

  • Mobile devices (iPhone® and iPad®) do not support Flash.
  • You do not need any kind of plug-in or Flash Player if you wish to look at your HTML5 Gallery.
  • HTML5 Galleries are quicker because they do not require plug-ins and they require less device resources.
  • The HTML5 Gallery player is controlled by CSS and Javascript that give fewer problems than the Flash Player.

What is  HTML5?

Here’s a brief explanation for those of you that don’t know much about it: HTML5 is the evolution of HTML 4.01 and the alternative to XHTML. It has been defined by several specifics written by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium - http://w3c.org ) in order to increase programming standardization and guarantee compatibility between several browsers.

HTML5 introduces several new tags in order to define semantically web page elements, to use directly multimedia functions and to divide the page structure (defined by the markup) from the graphics visualization (defined by the CSS) and the page contents.

Even if the HTML5 specifics have not been defined yet (they will be before July 2014) they are top choice for Microsoft, Apple and Google therefore it is the ideal solution for web future today.
