Program keeps crashing?  en

Hi there,

I seem to find myself in a bit of situation. I have a website that I've been working on, and as soon as a page becomes more...complex, shall we say, it lags and becomes very lethargic.

It's worse when I'm still working on the page and I want to edit the contents. Or preview the page. Then the program just freezes and I am forced to end the task and sometimes also end up losing valuable time of work.

Any ideas?

Melissa, there are some page changes and additions that can test your hardware, but generally WX5 can deal with it unless you push too hard. I find that if I save before preview (rather than relying on the automatic save when previewing) and CTRL+preview if making multiple pages changes it is more responsive. It doesn't hurt to occasionally tap the down arrow next to save and create a new backup either.

If your project is becoming unresponsive, I also strongly recommend step 5 export, export the project (in case of catastrophe) to create an iwzip file.

You haven't said what you are changing/adding, perhaps you could explain. If you are working on headers, footers or responsive layout, these steps can require multiple changes to multiple pages just for what appears to be a simple edit.

I am merely editing text and changing pictures. Doesn't feel like it would be too challenging.

And I have been doing the saving before making changes, still doesn't help as the program crashes in the middle of saving.

I should add, sometimes the save works, and I can make slow progress, but it'a annoying and tough

Melissa, in "my other life" I fix PC's - so pardon me whilst I ask some dumb questions and perhaps "preach to the converted"

Is your PC new or old, and has it undergone upgrades from Win7/8 through to Win10, or was it purchased with Win10?

Have you ever checked the hard disk

Click start or cortana, type CMD, right click and run as administrator. When the DOS box opens, type chkdsk c: /r, and then when it says run at next restart, answer Y

This will check and repair the hard disk - you can do the same thing within windows, but in my experience it is not quite as effective (please do not assume it is broken if progress stops at 12%, this appears to be a WIN10 issue, let it run, it should finish eventually). If the hard disk has been in use for a while I recommend a defragment (I use defraggler which is free and does a better job than the windows defragmenter - but it does take a while (NB do not use this if you have an SSD)). Before defragmenting, download ccleaner - it can work wonders removing hidden unwanted files.

What anti-virus are you using?

You may wish to try disabling it (if it is not Windows Defender), some anti-virus products are a bit "pro-active", they act a bit like a 4 cylinder car with 6 bags of cement in the boot. Disable the anti-virus and it is like removing the cement - everything runs faster and performs better. If this is the case, seriously consider using only the free Windows Defender or an anti-virus with a "small footprint" (eg Avast Free).

My PC is aging (although it does have an SSD as the primary drive with all docs (and WX5) on a standard HD), but recent instability was fixed by running CHKDSK c:/r & CHKDSK d: /r

I do not believe that WX5 is the issue.

If this does not help, please advise.

Good luck

Hi Chase, it's a new PC, running Win10 from the get go. I can check the check disk utility, but so far this only started a few weeks ago. As soon as the page becomes more complex, it starts lagging.

I've tried to defrag, disk cleanup, but I believe the issue lies with the program. Everything else seems to work fine, it's just this program after a few item edits.

I appreciate the advise, but I really think this should be focused more as a debugging of the program in some way.

Melissa, perhaps you are right, I was not aware you had a relatively new PC, my aplogies.

However, the only time I have experienced the sluggishness you refer to is when upgrading older websites with new features. Perhaps others on here can shed further light on your problems. In case it is an issue that Incomedia are familiar with on new Win 10 PC's, I have marked your post for their attention.

Hi Melissa.

What exactly do you mean by "more complex"?

What is the current size of the project? Could you maybe also attach a screenshot of the page you're currently working on (both grid and look in preview ) so that we can better understand whether there could be something in it that is making the software slower?

Also, did you notice this after a certain point when working on the project, or does this happen with whatever project? Meaning, what if you make a new one just for test?

Please let me know

Stefano

@Chase: Yeah, I figure it's pretty much a program issue. No, I started from scratch really on this version.

@Stefano: I mean this:

The empty parts on the bottom are because the program is somewhat refusing to let me continue.

I have been working on other pages in the same project and so far not a single crash (they are much simpler than this)

I'm essentially stumped.

Basically what happens is that I double click to edit an object (also happens when I click the properties button, or when I click the preview icon after making a change), and then the program begins to "think", so to speak. The cursor show the blue wheel, and it remains that way. There are a few times where after a few minutes, it reacts, but most of the time, it can stay that way for 10-15 mins easily before I have to end it through Task Manager.

Melissa, WX5 really does not like empty cells. Personally I would remove the unnecessary rows and then place an object in each empty cell that remains. Even without content in the objects it should improve the stability.

Chase, I think you're right. It's still a bit slow [again probably due to complex page] but definitely doesn't seem to be crashing anymore.

Thank you!
