I think the Checkout process needs an 'optional' additional step between step 4 and step 5 to allow payment to be made BEFORE the confirmation of order is processed. It doesnt make sense to sence order before payment.

I agree it is a bit annoying that the confirmation is sent out before the customer has made the payment, though I have found that dependent on your setup of the confirmation and payment the customer can link to the payment page from the email - I put a line in to remind the customer that the products wouldn't be shipped until we got confirmation of the payment from PayPal...
