I would like to have 4 options for one product each with a different price. How can that be done without having to create 4 products of the same name?

Upgrade from 9 EVO to 11 PRO its not possible i think - so you have to buy the full version.

By way of an alternative - would it be possible to change the x5cart via javascript? If so which software do I need to open xxx.js files?

No it would not be possible by editing a file. You will need to have a cart which supports the function you are loooking for.
The option is only present in the Professional edition of the program.
