I have had a computer crash and I need to restore my website from the html files ....

I used Website X5 Evolution 10 to create (what I think is!) a nice website, and saved the html files and uploaded them to my web server (wirelessinternetuk.com  if you are interested!)

However, I had an HDD crash and lost the project files ...

I don't have a project backup but I have the whole original website as .html.

PLEASE - can I import this back into Website X5 and if so, how!!

Many thanks. Bill.

Hi Bill,

As you say, it is a nice site. I just had a good look at it before posting this. It's pretty unfortunate that people who promote data safety can get caught out in this sort of situation...and I speak from experience here as my home machine went down last year and I had a very poor backup made that took me weeks to sort out. I was forced to completely redo my Version 8 site in Version 9. (and now into version 10)

Unfortunately there is no nice easy way to reimport your site back into X5 without the project files. Your best option is to copy and paste each section of your site into the program again. Not quite as bad as starting from scratch, but not great either.

Maybe there is a better way and if so, others in the forum will soon let you know. Hopefully you can get it sorted quickly and even improve your site. Just save the files in a couple of places next time! I now try to do this every week...but on the machine I am typing on right now it hasn't been done for a long time (guilty confession and I am going to fix that VERY soon!)

Urgh.. oh dear

Thanks for the idea of copy and pasting. (I should say, sorry you had problems with your machine. At least I had a couple of images which restored the data, but not the system (for a reason I won't bore you with) so I have not lost data or email at least)).

I had assumed that as I have the .html backed up in *several* places I could easily re-import them. The web site is safe on a couple of machines and external HDDs.

But it seems I need the project file. Thanks for the comment it's a nice site - I have seen better of course, but X5 allows you to make a reasonable site like mine for pretty minimal effort!

Pity there appears to be no easy import function, and thanks for looking!

Cheers, Bill.

It's because there are a lot of programs that use "html" but are not always compatible with each other. Storing sites as a project file also means that (I think) the program generates the html each time it uploads the site to the webhosting facility.

Images are now stored very differently in X5 and if you could just import the html, they would need to be stored in EXACTLY the same place on your computer for them to be uploaded. One missing image would mean a huge problem on your site...

Anyway, your site is clean and clear. easy to navigate and works well. X5 does do this sort of thing quite quickly and efficiently. Let's see what anyone else has to say about importing html - it may still be possible!

Texts I would not copy, but rewrite! Google will be able to see that you have copied!

is not possibile import a site from html file. You can only import the .iwp or .iwzip.
