How do I publish my web site in levels?  en

Several part question:

How do I publish my web site with a 2 or 3 deep subdirectory structure such as: www.mydomain.com/product-brand/product-page.html ?  I have about 20 different product-brands.

Next: Am I able to layout my complete website within the program, 240 to 300 pages easily since my current site is 240 pages, BUT then designate which page(s) I want to upload and when?  Thus, am I locked in to always uploading all pages even if a page is not ready to be published on-line, or can I pick and choose when to upload a page?

These two factors are very important and it seems that most web design software web sites do not address them.  I have run into a few already that have no file management capability, and many do not even allow you to edit your HTML manually.  When you look at a directory tree in Windows Explorer for example, you can organize your files neatly, creating as many subfolders as you want, and nesting them.  When you have a sitemap.xml file and it looks like a Windows Explorer pane, you get a fast understanding of where pages lie within a website, just as Google gets that understanding.  When every page is in the root directory, that can be maddening for larger web sites.  And for those of us who like drawing a skeleton first and laying out all our pages, but do not have time to complete them, I would like to believe that I can have placeholder pages in the software, and then choose to publish them weeks or months after other pages had been published.  Your help will be appreciated on explaining the publishing and file management ability of this software.  Thanks.

Hello John,

The program doesn't use subdirectories for the pages or levels but these are all on the same level. You will be able to organize them graphically in different levels but these will be then present in the same folder. It will show you the structure il levels and allow you to add further levels or move one page from one level to the other.

As alternative you can create sub projects which then can be added in subfolder and link from the main project to these.

In the Professional Edition there is the option for the pages which are still under construction where once you upload it, these will not be present online until you don't choose to remove them from this option and only then these are also visible online after the next export.

Many thanks!

Okay, if I am following you, in the Professional version, I can set up a few hundred pages and if say 100 are not ready, I can tag them to NOT upload, and thus I can get back to them later.

As for the no subdirectory option in the program, I guess I could set up each product section as its own file.  And then upload pages directly to a sub folder.  But for each file I create, does the main page default to the file name index.htm or index.html?  Because if uploading section by section in its own Website X5 file, I would not want a page in each subdirectory to be called index.  I would want them to be representative of their product line such as woodmont-doors.html or classic-brass.html, etc.  I would not be locked into having to call the top file in each site section "index" or "home", right?

Then of course with all these smaller files that I have to have, I would then need to link all links with absolute URLs and not use relative URLs from within the program, right?

As long as your software can help me with the mobile responsive issue I am currently facing, and progress me with my e-commerce, I am leaning toward it.  I was thinking the Evolution version would had been sufficient from your video presentation, but if I want more page control with publishing, sounds like you are saying I should go with the professional version.

Set me straight on the best approach.

Hello john,

If you create a new project with one page and you upload it in a subfolder the home page will always be index.html by default but this can be changed in step 2 of the program where you can edit the file name.

Yes if you use this approach in the main project you will need to add the links in the main project manually but this can be done easily. You can add these also in the main menu by using the Levels where in the properties you can add the URL to the project in the subfolder.

WebSite X5 doesn't create responsive websites but these are automatically fitted to the screen size of the mobile device. You can also create a mobile version project by using one of the mobile templates. This ca ben done by duplicating the project and then in the copy you change the template to a mobile one already present in the program.

If you want the function to not upload unfinished pages but have them ready in the project it is necessary to use the Professional Edition since this function is only present in this Version.

Many thanks!

Thank you, Claudio.  This is helpful.  I hope version 12 or 13 when it comes out will address the RWD.  This seems to be majorly important now with Google's new clamp down.
