Gallery placeholder size/shape?

When I create a gallery in X5 (v12) the placeholders where images are displayed are all square whereas my images are all rectangular. This creates large blank areas above and below the picture on the page. Is there a way to change the aspect ratio of the gallery thumbnail to eliminate this waste of space?

Sorry, I'm using the evaluation version of WebsiteX5 Evolution 12 but the issue seems to have been there from as far back as V8 which I still have

In this type of gallery the space between the rows cannot be removed since this is meant obe use used for the backgrounds options for the thumbnails.
