Hi, Do I have to have 4 different mobile sizes? I know the Pro will allow 10 but is there really any need for all that, considering each one has its own footer and header that needs to be fixed?
Can I have just a desktop and a 480 one? Would the desktop show well on tablets?

The choice is yours. You can opt simply for a desktop and smartphone/mobile viewport if you wish.
Depending on the complexity of the content you wish to display on your site this might be perfectly acceptable.
Tablets have varying resolutions, and so you may want to experiment with the size of the desktop viewport to accommodate most popular devices. Experimentation with some trial and error will pay dividends.
