Integrating Mailchimp on X5 Evolution 13

I am trying to send sign-up information for a newsletter via the database connection on X5 e13 without any success. The error I receive is 'cannot connect to database'.
After reviewing the information from mailchimp, I can embed their code but it fails because there are other JSON or java scripts running.
Has anyone figured out how to integrate mailchimp?

Unfortunately I cannot help you with the use of custom code. Generally speaking since the functions do not depend on WebSite X5, you can search useful information about the custom code with search engines like google or wait until someone on the community of Help Center can help you.

Alternatively, I have created a sign-up form using the existing tools within the X5 software but is there a way to check to see if someone already is signed-up on the database and if so, return a message to the user?

if you use WebSite X5 automatic registration and a registered user try to register again, a message appear for inform that the user is already registered.
