How to customize the shopping items on the page?

The default block for the shopping cart items list has a lot of wasted space. I want to show each category in a sort of grid that does not take much space.
I also want to have the ability to show one or more categories first and allow the user to click on the category to see/shop for the items in that category.
Can you provide some instructions on how to do this?

Line 1: Blablabla
Line 2: Pictures with link onto text in line 3, 5
Line 3, 5: Text for a categorie with anchor
Line 4, 6: Productcatalog
