Uploading Site To Internet  en

Am I missing something.... I upload the site to my internet server sending the entire site... site looks good... now I simply want to change one word on one page... I do... and I select the option to only upload the changes... it proceeds to upload mega-bytes of data that have nothing to do with what I changed...

I test again... upload the site... make no changes and upload the site using the changes only option and it uploads all the data again... I touched nothing...

There must be some way of controlling this process and keeping it from sending hundreds of files and images that are never altered in any way... all I want to do is edit one word on one page and it sends hundreds of files over and over again...

Please help!!

Robert, I doubt there are megabytes of data being uploaded, but each time you export to internet a large number of very small files required by your site are updated by default (css files, captcha images, etc). If you make one single change to a page, that whole page and any dependencies must be uploaded. If you make a minor change to a menu at any resolution, then every page that uses that menu must be updated, and of course if you do a CTRL+preview, then absolutely everything gets updated.

The built in FTP is not bad (and automatically creates a backup at every upload which is a nice bonus), but you may wish to try filezilla or similar. The information provided during update is a little more in depth (I use filezilla to include an iwzip file to be uploaded to the server as a bullet proof recovery option).

I have a folder of files that are linked on a product download page and these files are on average around 10 megs each... these end up in a /Files folder... this entire folder is uploaded everytime... these files are not changing at all... this is kind of nuts.

And as mentioned... I did a test where I uploaded the site completely and then turned right around and uploaded again with the changes only option, and all of these files were uploaded again as well as many other page and css files which were never touched.

Sure seems to me this needs to be looked at... the new upload took over 30 mins due to all these large files being re-sent for no reason... this is happening everytime i try to change even one word on a page.

Is there something I am missing in the settings.

Bob, have you tried filezilla or similar to see if the behaviour is the same? And have you checked your folder of  files to ensure dates and times aren't changing.

If no change, filezilla will not upload (& incomedia can hopefully address this issue).

I have only had a similar issue once in the past when the timezone settings on my host were faulty or scrambled, in my case I had to wait at least 24hours before I could upload changes subsequent to the original upload.

Hi All,

I noticed this same behaviour and reported it in this post https://helpcenter.websitex5.com/en/post/188162.

When I want to publish only some minor changes I do the following:

1. I go to step 5 (export)

2. choose upload the the internet

3. change the radio buttons under Upload Method from the second choise (only changes) to the first choice (complete website)

4. change the radio button back to the second choise

5. only then I go ahead and upload my changes.

This seems to work in many cases.

Succes,

Robert

Robert... interesting... tried it and it seemed like it might have an effect... it only uploaded about half of the files folder... changed to different pages in the preview mode and tried the upload again... and it went back to uploading the entire files folder... nice idea... but no cigar on this end.

It seems to re-write and update the modified dates on all the files in the files folder everytime I start the export option.

I have tried separate FTP programs and manually transferred the various files and folders from the preview folder but I have then had issues with the site not working on certain pages... elements come up missing... etc... pretty hard to know what files are being changed in the background when modifying a single element.

This is definitely becoming a show stopper for me. I also notice this happening with some image file links as well... they are being uploaded multiple times without ever being altered.

FWIW, if I make minor changes to a page, I've found it a lot faster and more economical to export the site to disk, then use an FTP program to upload just that page's html & pcss page to the site. Global changes (menu, etc.) affect a lot of files, so I just use the built-in uploader.

It does seem to upload pretty much everything when I use it, though, so I will definitely be trying the radio-button trick next time. Thanks for that, Rbbrt!

Something I did discover in case anyone else finds this useful...

The files I was linking using the Insert Link option of Local PC Files... this forced a copy of the files in a /files folder, which was not my favorite way to go anyway... but, these are the ones that now keep uploading over and over anytime I resend the site to the server.

Instead, if I use the Internet File link option and just type a folder name (of my own choosing) and the filename like "Downloads/File1.exe", this seems to work... these files can be placed in various folder groups if I want and because it is stated as an existing internet file, it seems the upload does not attempt to take any action on sending the files.

I noticed this seems to help with image file links as well, which were also resending multiple times anytime any page with an image link was altered.

For now... its an acceptable way to go... although it would be nice to see this issue addressed.
