Demo doesn't allow any work with existing web site
Author: Emilio T.I downloaded the demo version of Website X5 to see how it would work with my existing web site, www.mthigh.org. Until now, I have been using Microsoft Front Page 2003, and I am now searching for a replacement for it because Front Page doesn't work in Windows 10. (Shame on Microsoft.)
But the demo version of X5 is not letting me do anything with it. It wants me to start some new web site. I am not interested in that. I want to see how WebSite X5 will work with my existing web site. I believe that for that, I would need to use the Import function, but the demo version doesn't allow that.
So, how can I see if WebSite X5 will work for me?
Also a comment/question: It looks like WebSite X5 wants to create its own copy of all my website files. Why? Why not work simply with the existing files on my computer directly? This is unnecessarily duplicating all my files and using extra space on my hard drive. It seems like an unnecessary complication, hiding all my files in some proprietary format hidden behind the word "Project". I really don't like that.
Hello Emilio
You cannot import your material - you can however, easily import text by cut-and-paste.
It is rather easy and quick to build sites with X5 - even if you cannot import the material directly.
When all material ( text and images and evt. videos and sounds ) is ready, I think you will find that it is quick to build sites.
Kind regards

Easy to recreate - & responsive with little effort.
(but it is a big site with lots of content, so it should occupy your mind for considerable time - enjoy)
Hi Emilio,
as Erik and Esahc suggested, it is unfortunately not possible import a project into the demo version. I kindly suggest you to evaluate the software using the demo, and to import your work using the full. In case of issues, you can rely on our support and you have 30 days money back guarantee.
Please let me know if I can be of further help. Kind regards.

Thanks for all your responses, Erik, Esahc, and Elisa. But just to make sure I understand. It seems you are all saying that I cannot import my existing project into the DEMO bversion of X5, but it is possible to do that once I purchase the full version. Is that right?
As far as the Demo version is concenred, there is nothing I can evaluate unless I can import my existing project. I have no way to tell if my existing project will be imported correctly, and if all the internal as well as external links will work.
And, yes, my project is quite large. I kept adding to it over the years, and it would probably take me month to re-create it all from scratch, even with the copy and paste.
I am surprised that Incomedia focuses almost exclusively on serving people who still don't have a web site and want to start from scratch. There are already millions of existing web sites that simply need a good web site editor/builder. Especially now that
a) Microsoft's Front Page doesn't work in Windows 10 any more.
b) Adobe's Dremaweaver (as well as all other Adobe products) cannot be purchase any more. You now have to rent them for a monthly fee for ever, which is not a model that I will ever support.
In other words, there must be millions of people with existing web sites looking for a web site editor.
Emilio, you can not import any existing website into any version of WX5. You can however copy and paste content from a published site or even your front page source without running into limitations imposed on the demo product (eg number of allowed pages). Evolution has effectively no limits, but yes, you must recreate your site, the structure and each page from scratch.
PS I just looked again at your site, you may be right, the conversion could take many weeks :-(
Hi Emilio,
unfortunately, as Esach mentioned, if the existing project was not created using WebSite X5, it will unfortunately not be possible to import the whole file in the program. It is in fact generally not possible to import HTML files directly in the program, I am very sorry about this.
Please let me know if I can be of any help. Kind regards.

Well, that is a real disappointment. I don't have the time or the energy to re-create almost 100 rather large pages with lots of photos on each. I cannot start from scratch.
Also, it seems obcious by now that I would be locked into WebSite x5 for ever, with no way out. My project would not be portable. I could not edit my web site with any other software.
Without a way to both import and export my complete project and edit it with other software if necessary, it seem that WebSite X5 is simply not suitable for anyone who already has a web site.
Emilio, many of my websites came from or were generated by other products. Using copy paste, drag and drop I simply recreated them in WX5. Each to their own I guess.
