Picture quality / size to be used for background

Are there any hints and recommendation aboput the size / resolution of the background picture /line to be used as good "compromise" between quality (for desktop view and mobile) and size as it impacts the loading page paerformance?

Try basically 1200px x the image format and if it is going to use .jpeg files. 300 KB is still to be represented by the size of the file.
