EVO 18 Freezing
Author: Adrian WoodEVO 18 freezing
I am becoming increasingly fed up with my software freezing. I have EVO 18 and would be quite happy but for the fact that I never know when it will freeze and just stop doing anything.
I have tried:
Task manager shut down and restart - no change
I have cleared cache, stopped any software that might be interfering, restarted - no change.
I deleted the software from my system and reinstalled - restarted - no change
The thing is I can be working normally and all of a sudden - freeze. I have been making a record of what I was doing just before the freeze but this seems to vary and there appears to be no pattern so I cannot say if that the software froze when I was opening a text box or looking at a preview because any or all of these might apply.
Sometimes I wait thinking that the software will spring back to life and sometimes it does but mostly not which is very frustrating when I have work I have to do all over again. I have been saving at each step to mitigate that but last time I tried that I found that the file had not saved so I was wasting time.
Could you please think about this for me and tell me what you think might be causing this because I think I have tried everything.
Thank you
Adrian
Hello Adrian,
Have you any 'empty cells' in your page layouts? This can cause freezing like you describe.
Gordon (Esahc) explains the issue very well here:
https://helpcenter.websitex5.com/en/post/223213
The two main culprits of program freezing are without doubt 'empty cells' and antivirus software interfering with WebSite X5's operation. You might need to add an 'exception' to any antivirus package that you use.
Kind regards,
Paul

Belay the EVO 18, I actually have EVO19.1.8
Adrian, in the unlikely event you have checked out the solutions as kindly offered by Paul but you still have "issues" . . . .
I recently had a project become unstable (extremely long delays in saving and sometimes preview) which had behaved well for many years. I downloaded ccleaner(free) to delete all unnecessary files (I untick history in web browsers). This improved the reliability quite significantly, but a week or so later the program froze on preview. Fortunately WX5 offered to open a project not saved correctly next time I started and so I was rescued.
I immediately went to step 5, exported project and then reopened WX5 to import the project. Much better, but there were occasional hesitations.
I opened a command prompt as administrator, entered chkdsk d: /r and checked/repaired the mechanical HD (my documents is on D:), I also ran chkdsk c: /f (because my boot drive is an SSD, if this concerns you because you have an SSD you might prefer the built in scandisk available thru properties/tools)
My problem has been resolved (and my PC is faster). it appears I had a few weak or failing sectors on the HD.
PS If you don't have an iwzip of your project, make one (& do it often by adding date to filename!!!).

Fantastic advice thank you very much. I will carefully follow
Thanks again

My New Evo 20 has kept freezing each time I try to open a text box. I have C Cleanes rebooted danced a jig and it still freezes which means that I have to a hard restart each time to close the programme and start again.
Varioous folk have kindly offerd ideas but I am still freezing so thank you to them but there must be another solution as I have just invested money into the new version.

Adrian, did the project ever become stable following the above tips?
I suspect the issue may be with your project. Can you create a new project and do everything that causes WX5 to crash in your existing project? Please advise if the new project is stable.
If the new project is stable you may be able to fix the original project by exporting to iwzip (step 5 export project) and importing it (this will not overwrite the existing project).
If Importing the iwzip does not rectify the problem but the new project was stable we can discuss replacing "damaged" pages.

I have now saved the iwzip file - and dated it thanks for your advice. I have looked at the security software - Norrton - but can see nothing about Exceptions that would apply although I can all windows services it says but I would noot know what to select from the list.
My current project began as a copy of a previous one so there may be an imported problem there..
When I open the current project to work on it, I can open a page and somtimes it will freeze at that point or I can say, move a box or attempt to add a box and then it freezes. Sometines I get further if I copy a box and then change the contents but the most times it freezes is when I go to Preview. Task Manager closing gets it going again but this is, I think, a bit brutal because as in the case the other day, the software was freezing very quickly and kept doing it so I left it and went away.
I have been away for a while hence my slow reply to your kind advice but now I start again I am back to same problem.
I have also renstalled the software again but I don think this really achieves anything. This problem has really developed since buying and installing the latest 2020 version but I hesitate to think that that is where the problem lies because it is also very likely that there is a conflict going on on my system that I have yet to discover and resolve.
Adrian, (temporarily) uninstall Norton. If that solves the problem we can start there.
Please let us know..

I have unistalled the Norton software temporarily and I ahve also unsinstalled the previous versions of WX5 I still had on the system I have made a backup file of the project.
I have rerstarted the Evo and this time the box that was constantly freezing has opened so does this men that the problem is with Norton? I am feeling vulnerable now without antivirus and I ahve 200 days left on Norton so how long do you think I should be without it?
Adrian, I run win10 and rely only on Defender. If you too are using Win10 I believe you are safe (win7 not so much)
None the less, if you really want Norton to run (& if it is the cause of your issues) then I am sure we can exclude WX5 from it, this link should help:-

If you are still having issues, please advise.
(for the record I dispensed with Norton, Kaspersky, et al some time ago - I can find no evidence that defender is any less protection as long as you use common sense, in fact when I made the move Norton made my Intel I7 perform like an Intel I3 performance wise)

I didn't realise that, thank you. I have only just started on Windows 10 after holding out on 7 on the basis that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Before that I always used Webroot which, when it started was based in Dublin and was very reliable but they were eaten up by I don't know who and the whole service went to the wall accompanied by complaints and disguting comments from around the world which is why I went to Norton because that was a Which Recommended offer at the time so I thought I would try it for a year. I have never had security problems really but there is always the thought that there may be which is why and how they get their money I suppose. I don't know if I need to do anything to make shure Windows Defender does the job or whether it just does. Thinking about it, it sounds a bit like the Mafia Protection schemes one see in the films.
Having invested the money though I will look at the link and see what I might need to do.
What I dont see is how antivirus software can conflict with WX5. Do you have an idea on this?
Hello Adrian
I think you should look somewhere else for the problem.
I use Windows 10 and Norton - and Norton has not/never been a problem for X5. Norton offers more security than the defender ( depending of the Norton edition and settings of course).
Maybe other users could check in, and tell if they experience problems using X5 and Norton.

I have reinstalled Norton and have foud where you go to add exceptions and so far the WX5 is working but ony so far. If it proves to be a problem again I will think again and maybe delete Norton again. It might be settings on my pc or somesuch but when there was no Norton there was no problem. I look forward to hearing what others have to say.
Thanks for the comments - all very helpful
