Version upgrade export-import  en

Hello.  I have been using an old version of x5 version 9.

I have started to get a message on startup that this older version is no longer supported and is out of date.

I purchased the current version of X5 Pro.

I have two fairly large projects that I need to convert from version 9 to the current program.

I follow instructions to export my old project in version 9.  It takes a long time to do the export but does complete successfully as long as it is the only thing running on my computer.

When I attempt to import the version 9 exported project it gets to about 55% completion then gives an error code reading something like "header error in local file" and the process stops.

I have tried this several times with no success and tried re-exporting the version 9 project several times with the same result.

Please advise what I might need to do to do this project conversion successfully?

Is it possible I am making too big of jump in versions?

Do I possibly need an intermediate version of X5 like version 14 or 15 to do the conversion first then convert that up to the current version?

Greg, I believe that the current version/s can import from v11 so you need to import your projects into an interim version. I (and many others) will assist if required.

If you have not already done so, export project in step 5, export project, but do not include backups or previews. Please advise final size of iwzip file.

If you contact me directly at https://esahc.com I will be pleased to assist, but it is also possible that Incomedia may also be prepared to assist. Advise here if you would prefer to put your trust in them.

Please be aware that whilst the upgrade may be successful there will be a great deal of work to do to upgrade (tweak) to todays standards. Most people would recommend creating a new project and copying content from the published site.

Please advise.

I suspected that importing into an interim version might be what would be required.

Which interim version would be best for that?

When I export the project in version 9, I do not see any options on what to include in the export.  How do I change that?

The website is probably around 300 pages and contains many photos and video files.  Therefore the export file is around 8 GB.

I understand It may be necessary to tweak some things after the export-import is completed.   Starting over from scratch is just not a good option at this point though.

Thanks so much for your assistance.  Any help is greatly appreciated and I am not fussy about where it comes from.

Thanks for the help Elisa.  For the benefit of other users, I will outline what I did.

First I discovered that the export and import process is very memory intensive and I was getting memory errors.    I found it was necessary to do a fresh boot on my laptop  (ASUS ROG gaming laptop with 12GB memory) and only have the Websitex5 software open.

I exported my project file from version 9 which produced an 8GB compressed file.  Apparently in version 9 it includes all preview files and media files in the export.

I then imported the export file into version 11 of the program.  This was also a fairly long and memory intensive process.   The conversion appeared to be close to 100% successful as I could find no difference in the pages of my project.

I then exported the version 11 project file and had the option of not including preview files in the export file so that reduced file size down to 2 GB.   This was followed by import into the current 2021 version of X5.  Upon inspection of my project pages in the latest version, I see most pages converted well with just some pages that will need some attention and rebuild on the page.  Overall I would estimate the conversion from Version 9 to the 2021 version was around 85-90% successful.   With my website being 300-400 pages I am certainly pleased with the conversion and not having to start a new project from scratch.

May be a cleaning should be necessary.

Website was originally produced in 2010 and is still very functional.

Some of the older pages are not accessed much by the user but are still viewed some.  Older pages need to be updated but will be done with the new version of the software.
