Customizing a footer to show a site map

Greetings! I'd like to customize my site's footer beyond simply adding a Menu object. The drawback to doing that is that the subpages don't stay visible unless you mouse over the menu item, and I don't need to show every page on the site. I would love to format it as I have seen many other sites do, including Incomedia: several columns with selected links below headings.
Is the Menu object the correct choice, or should I use some custom coding? I don't know much HTML coding, but if someone can offer a template I can adopt, I would be very grateful. Thank you!

¡Gracias! Cordialmente.
