Hi Guys,
I am in the process of transfering from a currently live old website, to an updated website I have loaded on the temporary websitex5 hosted website url. Before I change from the existing live URL to redirect to the new site, I just want to test that the new site its functioning as expected.
I tried using the temporary URL, but that does not reach my site, even though I have uploaded the code there?
Please advise.
Thanks
Ray

I don't have WebSite X5 web hosting myself, but the principle should be the same.
Simply append any test directory name to the two entries, if possible.

I just added the red text as an example.
Hi Ray,
thank you for getting in touch.
You could test your website's behavior online by exporting it in a subfolder of your web space, for instance /test.
Thanks! Kind regards.

Hi Guys, Thanks as always for your prompt response.
I tried the adding the code to a subfolder as suggested, but when I attempt to access it I get the following.
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access this resource.
I used test1 as a subfolder.
When i go to my control panel, its shows that the domain is active.
Do I need to change the permisions to allow for a sub folder /test?

Hello Ray,
apologies for the issue when typing a reply, we will look into this.
Could you provide a screenshot of your current configuration in Step 5 - Export?
Thank you.

Hi Guys, I believe that I have worked it out.
It looks like the index file in the main directory is portected, so when you load up a website, the index file is not overwritten, but has it's name changed to add an extra '.html' suffix. OR, my websitex5 is creating index files of the form 'index.html.html'
If you look at the images attached, i have renamed the test1 folder files (Renamed the 'index.html.html' files to 'index.html') and can now view the website. I left the main root folder fles names as they were and you can see that in the image I attached. The question now is, under what conditions does the websitex5 sw create file names of the format [<filename>.html.html?]
What is the correct way to fix the names in the files on my pc?
What should I do so that this does not happen in future? (Am I the only person reporting this?)

If I preview the HOME page in my websitex5, it clearly shows the homepage file name of index.html.html
How does this happen?

Hello Ray,
if you check the Properties of the homepage, has a name for its generated file been set manually for it?
I remain available.
I have an external web host.
For test sites, I simply add the name of the test directory to the two existing details (see screenhot below) and export the website to the Internet.
Then I copy the website URL with test directory and paste it into the address bar of my browser to access the website in the test directory.

Hi Eric,
I checked the properties for every page and they all have a single '.html' with the exception for hidden pages which have no suffix.
If I select the Home Page in the MAP, item 3, and preview the page, it shows index.html.html in the address bar.
I checked each page using preview and they all show '<filename>.html.html'
Going back to my temp host name XXXX.websitex5.me and checking the files, i see index.html, index.html.html and index.php and an INDEX_HTML_OLD
Is there somewhere in your documentation that explains the reason for the different file names?
If I check the details of the index.html file it has a datestamp of 6/12/2025. So this file has not been overwritten when I loaded up my site, it's your default webpage, and whiole I can't view permissions, i suspect it can't be overwritten. Also, the index.php has a datestamp of 2/24/2025 and depending how you have your server settings this file could take preference.
So the question for me, is if i now point my original website address to my sever page, what will it see?
Hello Ray,
.php and .html are the extensions used, and which one is used depends on whether or not the pages contains anything that requires PHP to work
" they all have a single '.html' with the exception for hidden pages which have no suffix."
what do you mean by this?
All pages should show an extension, even hidden ones.
If you check your homepage, does it look like this?
or this?

Good morning Eric,
The properties page shows the filename plus the single html.
So index.html
In my design, I am working on some additional pages, and I have these marked as "hidden"
When I check the properties of these, they do not show the suffix "html"
What is the purpose of the "File Name" tick box on properties?

Hi Eric,
Here is the web export image to my hosted page.

This shows the rage of file names in my hosted root file directory. You will also see the "test1" directory there.

Hi Eric,
I just noticed that one of my pages, the-team shows only as "the-team-html.html" and no file with a single "html".
Your are correct, the hidden page "registration" in the file list shows the ".html" suffix, this is not shown in properties for than page?

Hi Eric,
Hello Ray,
the issue is here:
It seems you manually renamed these pages, which in general can be fine if you wish to have a different name for them than in the sitemap, but when doing so you must not specify their extension, as this is determined in the Expert tab instead: you should only have "index" here, for example.
I would recommend switching the option off altogether for the homepage, as it is best to leave it automatically named (in your case the name is index, so except for the extension it would be correct), and removing the extension from all other pages where this has been added.
I remain available.
I would recommend deleting all files with the double extension, as this will not automatically occur after an export with the fixed page names.

Hi Eric,
I just tried something on the \test1 folder.

Hello Ray,
please check my previous reply.

Thanks Eric,
I don't recall changing any of the names, and it only seemed to occur after I added the SEO, but I will keep an eye on this.
Is the purpose of the tickbox next to file name to enable a change?
I did delete the double .html files and removed the suffix in the properties and all is good now.

Hello Ray,
its purpose is to set a custom name, for example if your sitemap has a specific name that helps you organize the pages better, but you would like visitors to reach this page with a different name, however no extension should be added here, as it will be added automatically.
