Project management in v9  en

Hi,

Before I hang myself... Wink...could somebody tell me what I am doing wrong?

Enclosed alle the steps with screenshots and explanation .

I spend hours to try and figure out what I am doing wrong, but I can't seem to wrap my mind around it. Cry

Even though after export, all the images seem to go to the folder of my choise ( C/V9 )

the editor does not get this link/path so therefor the images dissapear once I place them in an other location on my computer and will not be able to transport them to another computer without loosing all the images.

In V8 you could export to another folder, hard disk, other computer and still all images and links to that images would stay intact.

Can somebody rescue this damsel in distress? Undecided

I changed preferences folder and started a new map just for the V9 clients, so they dont get mixed up with the V8 projects. There are clients who still work with V8 so these websites still stay stored as a V8 until a client him/herself would start working with V9.

If I keep the default preferences, everything will be mixed and un organised.

If I keep the default preferences, V9 starts putting the projects in: C/Users/LogoLogics/My documents/Incomedia/WebsiteX5 v9 Evolution/name of the project ( ridiculously long path, not easy to go to.. )

I prefer a much shorter and quicker to acces path: C/V9

So far everything works, after exporting changes in a V9 imported project, even the new images are stored in my C/V9 folder BUT... in the editor itself, the image path is still the original location on my computer, not the link to my C/V9 folder...

As a result, once I remove the image on my computer, its gone in the editor........

It must be an option to choose or own path in preferences and to store our projectsin a folder of our own choise, otherwise it would not be presented as an option. Still what goes wrong here?

Hi LogoLogics, I try to clarify how it works for v8 and v9:

Version 8 -> When you press Save for the first time, WSX5 asks you where to save the IWP file on your PC. We noticed that many (many) users contacted us to ask where the IWP file was saved on their PCFrown

Version 9 -> When you press Save for the first time, WSX5 saves the project automatically and you can find it everytime you launch the software.

Version 8 -> Many users asked us how to duplicate or rename the project file. They need to use Windows for that!

Version 9 -> Users can find the Rename, Delete, Duplicate button in the Project List panel

Version 8 -> Many users wanted to have a backup copy. So they just saved the IWP file. Result ->they lost all the linked files and images!

Version 9 -> The only way to export the project is 'exporting' the project at Step 5. v9 saves a single file with all the linked files and images included.

Version 8 -> Many users wanted to move the project file into another PC. The used the Export and Batch command at Step5, but chose a path that was not possible to recreate on the new PC. Result -> they lost all the linked files and images!

Version 9 -> The IWZIP file can be copied in any folder path. When v9 opens it, it automatically re-set the correct path.

Version 8 -> The temporary files for the preview were saved into the TEMP folder from Windows. Many times users lost all the images because Windows deleted those files!

Version 8 -> The temporary files for the preview are saved into the Project folder automatically.

Moreover you can choose the path for the Projects from the Preferences you can see when you launch WebSite X5. But user don't have to look at this folder...

WebSite X5 v8 (or v9) saves the absolute path for any linked file. If you import a IWP file, WSX5 looks at the linked files from their original path.

If you import a IWZIP file, WSX5 have to decompress all the linked files in a folder you can specify from the Import dialogue window.

I hope this info could help you to know how it works.. let me know if you need further info. Wink

Thanks Steve R but we sorted this out at the weekend by using "FULL SIZED" images embedded into our own communication posts! You'll find people don't tend to read our information..... But instructional images are great! Even I get confused on embedding an image on here and give up!! People just want to go to a page and see the info in front of them.....

I get no notification of posts and I have to try and remember who I've posted too? And more importanly? WHERE the hell to find the post!! I'm getting used to this Answers forum slowly but surely. It's getting too much like hard work!

And I don't post search results I actually give people knowledgeable RESULTS!!

Hi Frank, you can find all the posts you followed or commented from the 'My Activities' section. If you are interested in following a post, even if you never add a comment, simply use the follow button.

In 'My Activities' there are listed:

  • the posts where you added a comment and that you don't like to follow
  • the posts you set as 'follow' even if you didn't enter any comment

Every time a new comment is inserted into that post, then the post will be listed at the top of the list.

Hope this could help.

Hello,

I find myself having troubles again, with an imported project.

It worked find at the beginning ( showing the right path in the editor for the newly inserted images ) exporting them worked well and the new images were exported in the chosen folder. Now I have the same problem. Altough it is an already imported and working V9 project, the export does not work properly. The new images are not set to the desitnation folder. Result, if I change location, the images disapear.

Just to be clear:

I indert a new image say from my desktop, then export to my project folder ( wich in this case is on C/1V9 , it does not export this new image at all.

The path stays Desktop. Why does the export stops working?

Only if I remove the project out of the editor and import it again from the start, then it show the right path and the image stays, even if I move my original image from my desktop. However, if later I insert a new image and dont do the whole import again, it did not export to C/V9 again...what..??Sealed

I tried to explain it using an example:

Version 9

You create a new project and add an image from C:\MyImages\test.jpg

  • You export as IWPZIP file
  • You go on a second PC and import the IWZIP file
  • You select as folder where to unzip all the Project linked files C:\MySecondPC
  • Now opening the project in WSX5, you will see that the path for the image is C:\MySecondPC\test.jpg

It means that when you import the IWZIP file WSX5 changes the path of all the linked files to adapt them to the new location you chose when you import the IWZIP.

Version 8

You create a new project and add an image from C:\MyImages\test.jpg

  • You export/bacth the project in the folder C:\NewFolder
  • You go on a second PC and copy here this folder in C:\MySecondPC
  • Now opening the project in WSX5, you will see that the path for the image is C:\NewFolder\test.jpg

So, if you don't copy the folder in a new folder (C:\MySecondPC) that has not the same name of the folder you choose WHEN you export/batch (C:\NewFolder), WSX5 will NOT find the images!

Hope this is much clear. Let me know Wink

Hi Steve,

Thx for your answer and example.

If I understand you correctly, we always need to have a second computer, to make sure that the path of the images adapts to one stable folder?

As long as I use the project within the editor's list, the path will stay the path were I first got the images from?? I always need to import after adding images..???

Thing is, I have about a hundred projects running for clients, and make a lot of changes, adding new images etc. At first I will get the image form my desktop ( easier to work as long as I am working on a project ). After that I save the work, publish and export to a choosen stable folder on my computer.

With V8, after doing that, it did not matter that the first location where I got the images from on my computer changed, after exporting to the folder of my choise, the path in V8 changed to that one folder. As long as I did not change that folder, all the images stayed visible.

But as I move the newly added images ( V9 ) to an other location ( other then my desktop location ) the images are gone in the editor. The path still is C/Destop....

After exporting to the iwzip folder, these new images should re-apear again, even if I open that project out of the editor's list, and not need to import every time after I added images??

As you can see in my enclosed zip I change the preference folder to a location of my choise. That should not be the cause of loosing the images over and over, otherwise, why is there an option to choose a location other then the standard one yes?

Did you have a look in my enclosed zip? Can you tell me if my own setting there are wrong? I am working at the moment on a webshop with lots of images for a client, and I can not effort to loose the images every time...

mmm.... Undecided

The process used for v8 is equal to the one used for v9. You don't have to use the export/batch command everytime. It is useless.

You can solve your problem in the way I suggested. This way is much faster and permits you to avoid to export the files everytime.

Suppose that you have new photos to add in the project that are saved in D:\MyNewPhotos

This is what you do now (and you did using v8):

  • open WSX5 and link the new images from D:\MyNewPhotos
  • export and batch the project to C:\MyWork
  • move the original photos from D:\MyNewPhotos in another location

This is what you need to to:

  • copy/move the new photos from D:\MyNewPhotos to C:\MyWork\MyNewPhotos
  • open WSX5 and link the new images from C:\MyWork\MyNewPhotos

That's all! Your document will be always updated and all the linked files will be placed into the main folder C:\MyWork\. Moreover this folder will contains all the linked files organised in a better way, using the name you want and a subfolder structure.
If you want a backup copy and you want to save time you could copy these folders:

  • C:\MyWork\MyNewPhotos -> the main folder that contains all the linked files
  • %userprofile%\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 v9 - Evolution -> this is the WSX5 projects folder, the one that WSX5 uses to save all your projects

If you link these folder to a backup unit system you can do it automatically!

Every 2 weeks or at the end of your work, then you can

  • export/batch as IWZIP
  • delete the current project
  • import the IWZIP defining a new folder for all the linked files

In this way you can remove all the unused files from your project.

Hope it helpsWink

Hi Steve,

Had some time to look into your suggestions.

You suggest this:

Suppose that you have new photos to add in the project that are saved in D:\MyNewPhotos

This is what you do now (and you did using v8):

  • open WSX5 and link the new images from D:\MyNewPhotos
  • export and batch the project to C:\MyWork
  • move the original photos from D:\MyNewPhotos in another location

This is what you need to to:

  • copy/move the new photos from D:\MyNewPhotos to C:\MyWork\MyNewPhotos
  • open WSX5 and link the new images from C:\MyWork\MyNewPhotos

With V8 I did not have to move the foto's manually to the folder where I choose to keep my project, The editor did that for me.

If its a website with just a few foto's that would be an option, but what if you build a webshop ( as I am doin right now ) with hundreds of images...

With V8 I could get the images from where ever I wanted from my computer, and after I exported the project in to a folder of my choise to keep the project, the first location where I got the images from in the first place did not matter any more.

As long as I did not move my project folder itself, all the images stayed visible.

Now with V9, the immages still disapear after I move the images from the first location.

I can not immaging me moving all hundred images from a webshop manually to prefend them to disappear...??

Hello, the process is exactly the same as v8. The only difference when you export/batch is that v8 create a folder and v9 creates a IWZIP file!

Please note, probably this could be the problem we already solved.

Do this test:

  • create a new project and insert an image from C:\MyImage\ folder
  • save the project and export/batch it as Test1.iwzip
  • remove the folder C:\MyImage\ and delete the Test1 project from WebSite X5
  • import Test1.iwzip in the default folder. Please do not change the default destination folder C:\Users\XXX\Documents\New Document

Let me know

EmbarassedHi Steve,

The default folder ( if I don't change anything ) is:

C:\Users\Logologics\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 v9 - Evolution\

It is so confusing to me that after installing V9 all these differnent folders are created:

C:\Users\Logologics\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 v9 - Evolution\

C:\Users\Logologics\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 v9 - Evolution\ New Project

C:\WebSite X5 - Projecten\

C:\WebSite X5 - Websites\

I figured out that if I leave all the default settings ( preferences )

after export, website x5 creates a folder ( with the name of the project ) in:

C:\Users\Logologics\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 v9 - Evolution\

In that project folder I find the following:

Preview: images contains the images I inserted as long as I dont move the folder of these images..

Upload

metadata.xml

preview.jpg

project.iwprj

The iwzip files goes into : C:\WebSite X5 - Projecten\

Nothing happens( is put in a) utomatically in these folders:

C:\WebSite X5 - Websites\

or C:\Users\Logologics\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 v9 - Evolution\ New Project

Why are the created by V9 and what do we have to do with?

Should we always keep our images for each website/project in C:\WebSite X5 - Websites\, so that the images are always linked to this folder, and we cant move this folder after this, or the images disapear?

Whats with the new project folder?

If I create a new project as a test, and go to export V9 suggests:

C:\WebSite X5 - Projecten\

Confusing or is it just me?

By the way...V8 did not created 4 different folders?

Before I exported in V8, I made sure to create a folder with the project name, and gave that location to export the files in, thats it.

V8 then gathered all the images, iwp etc nicely in that one folder.

As long as I did not move that folder, all the images stayed put.

Even if I deleded the project from the V8 list in the editor, that folder still stayed there and was not automaticly removed.

If I moved it to another computer and kept the same location, everything went well.

V9 on the other hand, puts the iwzip in one folder, the project in another, and then creates two more, just for fun..?? haha..Surprised

I figured out that if I remove the project iwzip out of the V9 list, the project folder on my computer ( C:\Users\Logologics\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 v9 - Evolution\  )is deleted as well. So its not possible to keep the iwzip there also, for its gone if I dare to delete it in the v9 list....bbrrrrrFrown.

Can you still follow my explanation or am I driving you nuts already..Embarassed

Hi Steve,

I now did the test exactly as you discribed.

In this scenario ( after deleting the original folder C/MyImage/sea.jp ) and after deleting the iwzip out of the list in V9. The image was indeed preserved and the path was now C:\Users\Logologics\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 v9 - Evolution\ New Project/sea.jpg.

Again, thats great, but to create this path, I always need to delete the iwzip from the list, then import it again evrytime I add new images, that are not in that folder ( new project?? ) Further more, with over hundred different websites, Its not organised to throw all the images of all these differtent projects into one folder ( new project ).

So, is it the idea to first create seperate folders in C:\Users\Logologics\Documents\Incomedia\WebSite X5 v9 - Evolution\ New Project/

with the names of all the different websites, and keep all the images there. Get them even from these folders, so I dont need to delete the iwzip everytime just to set the path correct?

Can I group these images ( for example webshop page lunches etc ).

I quess if I for some reason delete the iwzip and import it back again, it will throw all the images loose in that folder..

I already have that problem with my converted V8 projects too.Frown

I am having the same problem, because it gets messy when building a new site with files being imported from everywhere, I thought by exporting the project and importing it I would be able to keep everything in one folder, and this works, but only to find that pictures placed within text boxes have lost their links and pictures placed into picture boxes are still there, but you need to highlight it, click on edit and then ok it, only then does it reappear ... not great when you have a bucket load of pictures on the site Yell I do agree tho, so long as you do not change your folder structures the files seem to be picked (somehow) from their original folder, not very helpful when trying to do housekeeping or archiving.

Hi Avid,

Yes, I figured this out ( with Franks help ):

Thing is, we will have to insert our pictures directly from the "linked" folder we decide to keep all items of a website in.

We can then decide to divide that folder in subfolders, so, especially when we have a webshop with several images and pages, we can name subfolders by the actual page name in the webshop and only put the images of that page in it.

That way, our folders are organized, and we link directly form the path that wont be moved afterwards.

We don't seem to have the luxuary to get them from what ever location we want, for if that location changes, the images are gone.

Other then V8 ( which nicely puts all inserted images themselves in the linked folder we choose to maintain in the: export the files step 5 ) V9 only exports everything zipped in the iwzip. Other then V8, this zip is no recognizable path for each image, so the editor cant find them, once we change location where we first got the image from.Cry

Only if we delete the iwzip out of the editors list, then import it back in, it will throw images ( all together ) in the linked folder of our choise. If we were so bold to change the first location, we can start all over again.

If we dare to have changed or got images from more then one different location, and changed these locations, before deleting and importing the iwzip, then we still seem to lose images, its a mess.

Frank recorded some of our testing:

http://www.templarwebsites.co.uk/testing.php

* it can take some time before the demo starts, after clicking on Part one and Part Two.

You can see how the Incomedia way, loses the images, the old V8 way keeps them.

Oh, yes about this tip:

pictures placed within text boxes have lost their links and pictures placed into picture boxes are still there, but you need to highlight it, click on edit and then ok it, only then does it reappear.

I will try this out Avid. It crazy that we need to figure out all these work arounds, but it's good to know. We can help ourselfses this way, hoping Incomedia will fix these things soon!

Hello all, we already find this error and we already fix it. We will release this fix in the next update (as beta) next week I think.

The problem is related to a really stupid thing: a final slash!

Note that it only happens when you change the destination folder for the linked files from the Import dialog window. If you leave the default one, than it works correctly!

The default folder is:

C:\Users\Frank Laptop X5\Documents

without the final \

If you change it, then it became

C:\Users\Frank Laptop X5\Documents\BagDesing\

while it should be

C:\Users\Frank Laptop X5\Documents\BagDesing

Thanks Wink

Hi Steve,

I did not know you answered, still no mail notification when someone answers on a followed topic..Undecided

Thx and nice a new update is on the way.

As there were different issues in this topic ( images disapearing in text boxes and then the loosing of images after changing the first location on a computer ), I am not sure what will be fixed soon?

Will we be able to get pictures from where ever we want, and will this fix mean that we dont always have to import so we dont loose images after changing the first location?

I am for now helping my self and clients, by inserting all images in once fixed location.

Had to re-insert all images for 3 websites(shops ).Frown

Then getting them only form that fixed folder to insert in the website x5 project, so the path stays in the same folder, that will not be changed in location, not even when transported to another computer. ( clients ).

Organizing this folder first by creating folders like " layout", "homepage", or names of pages of a webshop and then putting alle images of that page in one folder, can be done, but after importing the iwzip for some reason, x5 throws them all togheter in one folder, no way to keep things organised.

Hello LogoLogics, we fixed the // problem when importing a IWZIP. So you will be able to import an IWZIP file and choose the destination folder you want without have the missing images problem. To solve now all you have to do is import the IWZIP file WITHOUT change the default destination folder. I hope we could release the beta this week. Wink
