Missing Images when transferring to a new computer
Author: Glenn P.Hi there,
We are trying to load our website which was created in Website X5 V8 Evolution onto a new computer. The operating system is exactly the same Win XP Pro.
However when we install the software and then try to open the website template - all the images are missing, the text is there and everything is in situ… except the images. When we test the page where the images should be we see a text box which includes the path of the image and then the following message ‘Error File Open Error’. Then when we access the actual page in the template there is just a blank space where the image should be. We have a lot of images on our website and if we have to physically re-insert every image then it is going to take forever. I must admit I am very surprised that this has happened.
I would appreciate any help or advice. Many thanks in advance,
With best wishes,
Glenn
Hello Glen,
If you only moved the IWP file on the new computer then when you start the project then it searches the images in the old folder structure and if it cannot find them you get this error message. You can try to open the path shown in the error message and then recreate this path and add the images there so that the next tiem you open the preview while holding the CTRL key, it will reload all images.
Another option would be to open again the project in the old computer and then in step 5 choose to Optimize and Batch to folder and then full optimization so that it will create a folder with the project file and all images in this one. In this way on the new computer it will automatically load the images too.
Please feel free to write back if you need more information.

Hi Claudio,
Many thanks for replying I really appreciate it.
Alas re the first option... the error box only appears in the preview (test) page. When you go into the actual template there is not even a box - only a space where the image should be.
Re the 2nd option - unfortunately we cannot access our old computer as it crashed (terminally).
I should point out that we did in fact load all the files on the new computer and not just the IWP file. So in theory everything that is required to re-load is there.
Thanks for suggesting the two options, but I have a feeling that there may not be much we can do except spend a lot of time re-loading all the images individually.
Thanks again.
With best wishes,
Glenn
Hello Glenn,
if you don't want re-loading the image, you can try to re-create the path that you see in the error message. So you can copy in this path the image and recreate the preview with the CTRL+Preview.
Hope this help.

Many thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately it didn't work.
We have decided to purchase new/other software to rebuild our website with. For us to insert every image again would take forever and we simply do have the time to waste. In addition to this - there is also the strong possibility of this problem happening again, with no solution in place to deal with it. We simply cannot afford to have such an unstable back-up procedure, it needs to be far more professional and reliable.
I do thank you for your time in trying to resolve the problem, and I do hope you manage to find a suitable solution for this particular issue, so that other customers may have a more satisfactory outcome.
Kind regards,
Glenn
In the interest of balance I would like to add a footnote to this thread for the benefit of anyone referring to it in the future.
At present the comments would suggest that WebSite X5 is unprofessional and unreliable. This is not the case. WebSite X5 is as stable and reliable as any other web design software.
The problem in this instance appears to have arisen on account of a computer crash following which the consumer had no valid/usable backup safely stored on additional media.
Maintaining a reliable backup strategy is an important part of basic housekeeping when using any piece of software, not just WebSite X5. I strongly recommend that all users export their entire projects (complete with images and image path structure when using earlier versions) regularly to standalone media such as CD/DVD, USB flash drive, portable hard drive, or network drive.
If this is done then reimporting the complete project file and rebuilding the preview using the 'CTRL' key, etc will open the project successfully on a different computer.
WebSite X5 already backs up projects to the local computer drive. It is important to be fair and not blame the software developers for instances in which consumers have failed to backup to external media, as they obviously have no control over this.
My sympathy goes out to Glenn as a computer crash is never pleasant, but with all due respect I must counter the argument that WebSite X5 is somehow deficient.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for replying. I should point out that I was not referring to the software being unprofessional. I was merely referring to finding a suitable solution to the problem - if my wording offended then I sincerely apologise.
However, I do take great exception to your comments whereby you infer that we did not back up correctly. I would like to point out that we did back up correctely on two different external hard drives and the problem occured with each one.
I have been using Website X5 for over 5 years and up until now have been very happy, and have in fact recommended the software to many friends and work colleagues. Unfortunately it's not until you have a computer crash you find out if the backs up work.
I am quite happy to put this experience down to the fact that it appears to be one of those weird things that can happen with technology.
Kind regards,
Glenn
No worries Glenn,
Thanks for the addendum. You did not cause offence in any way. My footnote was added for the benefit of users considering WebSite X5 as a new software purchase. It was important that they realise that the software is not flawed but works as intended, and I was specifically addressing your comment:
...there is also the strong possibility of this problem happening again, with no solution in place to deal with it. We simply cannot afford to have such an unstable back-up procedure, it needs to be far more professional and reliable.
Prospective WebSite X5 users can have confidence that if they store their exported projects on alternative media then they can be retrieved and worked on without issue, other than mechanical defect or hardware incompatibility, etc (which would be the same for any software vendor)
Best regards,
Paul
