Sales tax and shipping in the United States  en

I have not used Website X5 yet, but I am considering it.  I have questions about sales tax and shipping in the United States.

I would like to know if the shopping cart and related features can be selected to meet requirements of the United States. Here the sales tax depends on state in which the on-line store is located and the state of residence the purchaser. Also, we call it sales tax, not VAT.  I see some previous posts on this topic, but they are over a year old. They involve multiple carts, which seems awkward. Is there any further progress on this?

Also, is there a checkout application in which sales tax and shipping cost can be calculated based on state criteria and added automatically?  Shipping costs depend on size / weight of the object, distance, and the carrier and delivery time selected.

Hello Peter,

At the moment it is not present this feature which calculates the sales tax based on the state you enter. These are set as fixed value for the entire cart.

The developers are taking it in consideration but at the moment the functionality is not present.

Please feel free to write back if you need more information.

I think what your developers don't understand is that we Can't sell through the shopping cart until we can have the option to pick the states we have to collect taxes for.  We have no choice in the matter so its a must for us.  Sara

Hello Sara,

The developers have been informed about it and they are taking it in consideration.

At the moment I cannot tell you if and when this function will be present in the program.

Many thanks!

RE: U.S. SALES TAX.    I may be wrong, but most U.S. online retail businesses that are small to medium sized do not need to collect sales tax from customers except customers who live in the same state as the business. Thus, if the retail business is located in Massachusetts, the shopping cart's only need is to "know" the Massachusetts sales tax rate.

Assuming my understanding is correct about the U.S. merchants' legal obligations, would it be relatively simple for the shopping cart designers to (A) add a function that enables the merchant himself to enter the sales tax rate for his state (e.g., Massachusetts) during cart set up -- and (B) add a function that applies the tax rate only for retail customers who type in Massachusetts as part of the shipping address. In this scenario, the shopping cart designers would not need to deal with the variables of 50 different states or their specific tax rates. Of course, if the Massachusetts government raises the tax rate in the future, the merchant would need to re-enter the tax rate into the shopping cart. This shopping cart looks great, and adding this sales tax feature for the U.S. would allow U.S. merchants to use the shopping cart. Thanks.

Dear L M.

in U.S if your business is in Massachusetts and your client is in callifornia, when they buy goods online, they have to pay callifornia's sale tax not Massachusetts!

sale tax depends on buyers address.

there is a huge difference between state of west viginia and state of New York, that is impossible for these two states to have the same tax rate!

Dear Anthony A....

The only time an online merchant collects sales tax is when the customer lives in the same state as the merchant is located.   For example, if I'm an online merchant located in Idaho, the only buyers I collect sales tax from are buyers who live in Idaho.  There's been debate for a long while about whether online buyers should have to pay sales tax on all purchases, no matter where the merchant is located -- but so far the question hasn't been settled.

It depend on the states law, and were your company being registered.

and by some new laws, some of the big online companys are force to collect tax, like amazon, but still over there is depend on sellers as well (place of their business) they never going to make it easy yet the will make it more complicated!

at the mean time even with states laws, are your goods tangible or no?

I am located in florida usa.  im setting up the shopping cart option the problem is the only tax you have is a vat tax. We need it to have a option to say sales tax or even better make it like your shipping options so we can just add any taxes options to the invoice.

thank you

Ralph
