Website X5 website page numbering problem

When I add pages to the sitemap, then remove the page, the page number system is not decramented, so if I start with pages 1,2,3 then add a page I have 1,2,3,4.
now delete page 4 now add a page - website X5 adds page 5
delete page 3,4,5 - add a page. I now have 1,2,6.
This is just to illustrate a problem. The page counter is not effective, it adds page numbers but does not remove the page number when pages are removed in sitemap.
Please will you advise how to get around this problem.

Thanks for your reply, for designing my site it is easier if the numbers are in proper sequence. If I delete pages during the process, the range of numbers I will end with be crazy, making it harder to work with my site. Other website designers I have used do not have this problem.

Are you deleting the pages before they go live on the web or after Paul G?
